Overview

Reissued for the first time on CD, 13th House, originally recorded in 1980, finds pianist McCoy Tyner surrounded by a first-class rhythm section and a cadre of horns. Splitting the arranging chores with Frank Foster (who takes on his own “Leo Rising”), Jimmy Heath (the title track), and trombonist Slide Hampton (fleshing out Tyner’s classic “Search for Peace”), Tyner stirs up a rousing session that takes advantage of the additional orchestral girth. The ensemble also provides some fine soloists, including saxophonist Ricky Ford, trombonist Slide Hampton, brass men Oscar Brashear and Charles Sullivan, and flautist Hubert Laws, as well as bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jack DeJohnette. The leader himself displays his trademark whirlwind technique. Tyner was stretching himself during this fertile period, and 13th House is among his more successful enterprises of the time.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
After a decade of consistent recordings for Milestone, pianist McCoy Tyner ended his association with the label with this big band set. On originals by Tyner, Frank Foster and Jimmy Heath, such soloists are heard from as Hubert Laws (on flute and piccolo), tenor-saxophonist Ricky Ford, trombonist Slide Hampton, bassist Ron Carter, trumpeters Oscar Brashear and Charles Sullivan, and Joe Ford on soprano; everyone wanted to play with McCoy Tyner! The powerful music lives up to its potential, making one wish that Fantasy will eventually reissue this Lp.
