16 Most Requested Songs

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
16 Most Requested Songs is a midline-priced collection that spotlights many of Kate Smith's best-known and most popular performances for Columbia Records, including "When You Wish Upon a Star," "I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo," "Be Careful, It's My Heart," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," "My Melancholy Baby," "Memories of You," "The Last Time I Saw Paris," "My Buddy," "Embraceable You" and "We'll Meet Again." Although it's far from a perfect retrospective of her career, it's still a nice sampler of familiar items, and it may satisfy the needs of some casual fans who only want the hits.

    Kate Smith in Prime Form

For those who only know Kate Smith from "God Bless America", this cd will be a welcome surprise as she showcases her amazing ability to sing tender ballads in a sweetly understated way, yet somehow still showing her tremendous vocal power. Just listen to the samples on this site and I think you will become hooked not only on her strong and clear voice and impeccable diction but also her sentimental phrasing and understanding of lyrics. The songs selected are among the best ballads of the 20th century as well.
