Overview

Now available on CD: “A brilliant set of principles essential for people to function at their best, overcome personal obstacles, and achieve their heart’s desire”*

17 LIES THAT ARE HOLDING YOU BACK explains how to recover from the lies that most of us tell ourselves to prevent us from being everything we could be—lies such as:

• “It’s who you know”

• “I’m not good with people”

• “I’m too old”

• “Winning the lottery would solve everything”

• “I don’t have the time”

Actually, as Chandler points out, you already have all the power you need to free yourself. And part two of his program outlines these truths and shows you how to recover them and use them to change your life.

I had reservations in listening to this book, because I have read so many self help books throughout my life. In the end, I just got tired of them. This book by this author is an exceptional exception. Steve Chandler has taken the time to share his failures and shows us how to overcome them in a reasonable personal practical way. He not only motivates you, but makes you understand that you and you alone must seek your own happiness. He tells you how, he tells you true stories and he succeeds in the goal, of helping you help yourself. This book needs to be near where you reflect on your life. Whether it be in your car, home office or den. I say this, because this book and tape will help you seek out goals that make you happy, overcome setbacks to restore your happiness and most of all share such enlightenment with others you love and respect. I highly recommend this book for everyone and it is a great gift to anyone you love. What else needs to be said about such a work of art that will calm your life and reach goals you have always dreamed.

Having read and admired Steve Chandler's first two books, I was prepared for a lot of rehashing of the same material - which was okay as the first two were truly inspiring works. However, there's no recycling here. '17 Lies That Are Holding You Back & the Truth That Will Set You Free' is truly a book of practical thoughts to help you quit fooling yourself with self-inflicted falsehoods and face life with a new attitude. Mr. Chandler does not allow for excuses (too old, not enough education, etc.) and he writes with an easy-to-read style that is without pretense. This is a guy who hit bottom, fought his way back, and plainly tells you how he managed to do it - and how you can too. This wasn't meant to be a deep psychological tome -- It was meant to be practical. For example, most 'self-help' books are full of exercises that tell you that 'you must stop right now and take this test,' or 'write this 100 word essay,' before you can go on. You will find none of this in '17 Lies.' Imagine sitting across a table with a man who has hit rock bottom in his life, and between sips of coffee he tells you his story and how he climbed back, and you batter him with questions which are answered without psychobabble and in a humble, enlightening way. If you listen carefully, you'll here truth that is simple, makes sense, and hear many things to make your own life better, whatever your lot in life. Imagine that little scene and make it happen by spending a night or two with Steve Chandler's '17 Lies That Are Holding You Back & the Truth That Will Set You Free.'

If you only read one 'self-help' book this year, this is the one to read. Self-deception and its destructive effect on our ability to achieve our true potentials is, according to this marvelous book, unnecessary and counterproductive. Chandler details 17 'lies' we all tell ourselves; to escape responsibility, to evade possible pain. All of these 'soul lies' erode our self-esteem and hold us back from living lives as full and satisfactory as they might otherwise be. What are these lies? 'It's who you know.' 'I'm too old for that.' 'There's nothing I can do.' 'People really upset me.' 'I'm sadder but wiser now.' And so on. We all tell ourselves these things. We use them as excuses for not doing things we are afraid to do; because we might fail, because we might make ourselves look foolish. So we tell ourselves, 'That's just the way I am' or 'I am helpless.' All lies, says Chandler; all ways in which we victimize ourselves and avoid taking action. Using examples from his own life, and the lives of others, Chandler pinpoints the lies that hold us back, and illustrates simple but effective ways to overcome them. If you feel you have little control over your own life and destiny, that things just 'happen' to you, that people upset you and throw you off your stride, you are lying to yourself, says Chandler. Other people can only upset you if you ALLOW THEM to upset you - or not. Self-control over external control is an important part of Chandler's message. Decide what you want. What pleases you? When have you felt most alive? Pay attention to those things and live on purpose. You have the ability to decide, and Chandler shows how you can do it. Think that winning the lottery will solve your problems and make you happy? Chandler cites a startling comparison study of people who had won lotteries, and people who had become paraplegics. One would expect the lottery winners to have become happier, and the people who had lost the use of their legs to become unhappy. The study found NO CHANGE in the level of happiness in both groups. The lottery winners remained as happy or unhappy as they had been before winning; the people who had lost the use of their limbs remained as happy or unhappy as they had been before becoming paraplegics. The inescapable conclusion is that circumstances do not dictate our level of happiness - we do. Open this book at any page and the real-life examples and remarkable solutions spring out. '17 Lies' is easy to read, remarkably insightful, and just might change your life - if you allow it to.

Awesome book! As a leadership and business consultant, read TONS of books. But rarely have I come across one as good as this. The difference, I think, is that Chandler is not being empathetic - he's truly being SYMPATHETIC to our very own souls and lives. He has managed, very eloquently, to expose many of the lies that keep us from realizing even a small portion of our potential. Instead of focusing on well-known historical figures, the author has managed to pretty much write the biography of just about anyone who could potentially get their hands on this book. And once it's in your hands, it is likely to stay there from start to finish! If this book does not become a million-plus seller, it will both amaze and disappoint me. Buy more than one copy - keep one and give the others to family, friends, and coworkers. It can truly be life-changing! Dan Gunter Chief Guru of 'Why NOT?' Affinity Leadership Concepts Woodland, AL
