Overview

1776 is a rather odd concept for a musical, chronicling the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It works better than it should, however, in that it gives life and character to these immensely famous names that everyone has learned about in history class. Despite it being the tale of the Congress, the two strongest songs are saved for peripheral characters -- Martha Jefferson gets "He Plays the Violin" and an unnamed courier sings the heartwrenching "Momma Look Sharp." The new Broadway cast was highly acclaimed, having been nominated for numerous Tonys and Drama Desk awards. Gregg Edelman's performance as Edward Rutledge is particularly powerful, making his "Molasses to Rum" one of the most intense moments in the recording. Also worth noting is the fact that John Adams is portrayed here by Brent Spiner of Star Trek: The Next Generation fame, making this a collector's item for devoted Star Trek fans.
