Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Characterizing a decade in one slim book involves making choices—Corrigan has done quite well at selecting nineteen significant events or developments for each decade since 1900. Young history buffs get a look at politics, war, fashion, science, and technology in this "Amazing Decades in Photos" series; illustrated not only with photographs, each book makes use of posters, cartoons, prints, and newspaper pages as well. The "decade of discovery" (1900—1909) brought us the invention of the airplane, advances in the telegraph and radio, phonograph records, mass production of Fords, and Einstein's Theory of Relativity. On the darker side were President McKinley's assassination, the Russo-Japanese War, fighting in Cuba, Sinclair's revelations in The Jungle, and the destructive earthquake in San Francisco. To his credit, Corrigan touches on art—in this title represented by early movies and modern artists Picasso, Braque, and Klimt. For fun, Americans could attend the first World Series, or the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair (sampling peanut butter, iced tea, or ice cream cones). Other achievements of a mostly optimistic decade include Peary and Henson's discovery of the North Pole, the beginning of the Panama Canal, and the founding of the NAACP. Looking ahead from a "time of discovery and progress," Corrigan warns readers that the next decade would bring war and worldwide pandemic. The author's style is brisk, the illustrations often fascinating; the abundance of period photos, graphics, and popular art can help promote visual literacy. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
