All Music Guide - Arwulf Arwulf
Sounds of Yester Year's 1920's Flapper Party is essentially Timeless Historical's California Ramblers 1925-1928 with eight of the 25 tracks removed and one added. This amounts to 16 titles, which are more than you get per disc on Biograph/Collectables' New York Jazz in the Roaring Twenties, Vol. 2 and Vol. 3. Opinions will vary as to which set offers the best tune selection. Seasoned fans of this perky little hot dance band may award that honor to Biograph's New York Jazz in the Roaring Twenties, Vol. 3, which was originally released on vinyl LP as Hallelujah! The only song on 1920's Flapper Party that doesn't appear on the Timeless collection is "I'm Gonna Charleston ...

The only song on 1920's Flapper Party that doesn't appear on the Timeless collection is "I'm Gonna Charleston Back to Charleston," but if missing out on that one number doesn't bring you down, between the two it would be wiser to opt for the Timeless edition. In the final analysis, of course, it is better to have even a truncated California Ramblers collection than to have no California Ramblers collection at all. This band made literally hundreds of recordings over a span of ten years, and its ever-changing roster of skilled jazz players included Red Nichols, Jack Purvis, Chelsea Quealey, Sylvester Ahola, Abe Lincoln, and the Dorsey Brothers.
