Circle is a label that specializes in reissuing rare acetate recordings that were made by various transcription services during the late '30s and early '40s for sale not to the record buying public but exclusively to radio stations for broadcast purposes. For this reason the material issued on this compilation is quite rare and does not appear in standard Richard Himber session-by-session discographies. These excellent sides were recorded for the World Broadcasting System between 1938 and 1940, during a time when Himber was technically a Victor recording artist. Vocalists used on these dates were Stuart Allen and Marion Shaw. Two noteworthy instrumentalists in the band at this time were trombonist Wally "Blue" Barron and reedman Hank D'Amico, who would soon develop into an accomplished early modern jazz clarinetist. Himber's World transcriptions are somewhat different from his Vocalion, Victor and Decca recordings; in addition to a healthy range of material composed by some of Tin Pan Alley's best songwriters (Irving Berlin's "The Yam" takes the cake in this category) and pleasant mood pieces like "Cielito Lindo" and "La Paloma," Himber's ensemble handled a "Romance" by Anton Rubinstein; Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's "None But the Lonely Heart"; Sir Edward Elgar's "Salut d'Amour"; the famous "Intermezzo" from Pietro Mascagni's opera Cavallera Rusticana (1889) and Edvard Grieg's marvelous "March of the Dwarfs," also known as "Trolltog" or "Zug der Zwerge"; from his "Lyric Pieces, Op. 54" (1891). All of which makes this one of the more unusual and enjoyable Richard Himber albums available on compact disc.
