All Music Guide - Eugene Chadbourne

Serious lovers of world music will inevitably want to travel to wherever home is to a particular genre, at least symbolically through their record collections. Meanwhile, the market for reissues continues to keep many hybrids from the past in circulation. The Harlequin label provided a reminder of the Hawaiian music fad that took place in England in the '30s and '40s, the response apparently good enough to merit further collections of material by Felix Mendelssohn & the Hawaiian Serenaders. Potential swimmers in these waters should wade off the beach slowly, making sure that this interpretation is to their liking. To certain ears, just about any music played in the '30s and '40s might sound corny and dated -- Mendelssohn's bunch are not the lads who are going to provide a breakthrough for this prejudice. These are fine musicians, however, playing numbers such as "My Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua" with finesse and feeling, although the emotional range in the latter department is obviously limited to a kind of a giddy, silly sentimentality. 1940-1945 will fit well into a collection of popular British music from this era and it makes more sense in that context than as Hawaiian music. Harry Brooker, father of Procol Harum's Gary Brooker, was one of Mendelssohn's merry men.
