"1996" is a work of fiction that details an experience that Naylor had. What makes it fiction is that she gives her own version of what she thinks happened from the point of view of the other parties involved. I love Gloria Naylor's writing so when I did some brief research into her life and read that she had had some problems with the government (to put it mildly), I was curious to know more about the situation (government spying, mind-control etc...). When I started reading the book I will admit that I was sceptical of Naylor's story. After reading the book I am definitely a believer-- at least to an extent-- and that which I cannot believe, I am at least open to the possibility. Whether you believe it or not, reading "1996" will make you look at things differently; I can no longer pass strange businesses without wondering if they are a front for something else.
