Protest as she may -- and she does, claiming in the liner notes that #1's is "not a greatest hits album! It's too soon, I haven't been recording long enough for that!" -- it's hard to view #1's, Mariah Carey's first compilation, as anything other than a greatest-hits album. Carey was fortunate enough to have nearly every single she released top the pop charts. Between 1990's "Vision of Love" and 1998's "My All," all but four commercially released singles "Anytime You Need a Friend," "Can't Let Go," "Make It Happen," "Without You" hit number one, with only a handful of radio-only singles "Butterfly," "Breakdown" making the airwaves, not the charts. That leaves 12 big hits on #1's, all number ones. Since Carey's singles always dominated her albums, it comes as no surprise that #1's is her best, most consistent album, filled with songs that represent state-of-the-art '90s adult contemporary and pop-oriented urban soul. That said, it isn't a perfect overview -- a couple of good singles are missing because of the self-imposed "#1 rule"; plus, the Ol' Dirty Bastard mix of "Fantasy" is strong, but fans familiar with the radio single will be disappointed that the chorus is completely missing on this version. The album is also padded with a personal favorite her Brian McKnight duet "Whenever You Call," taken from Butterfly and three new songs -- the Jermaine Dupri-produced "Sweetheart," the Whitney Houston duet "When You Believe" taken from The Prince of Egypt soundtrack, and "I Still Believe," a remake of a Brenda K. Starr tune -- which are all fine, but not particularly memorable. Still, that's hardly enough to bring down a thoroughly entertaining compilation that will stand as her best record until the "official" hits collection is released.

    #1's

Mariah Carey is awesome i love her stunning 7 octaves big voice no other female artist in history has realized an album with only number 1#hits and she is bigger than Whitney Houston,Madonna and Celine Dion but they all are great but they can´t beat Mariah she is one of a kind because she writes all her own materials and produces them not Whitney or Celine. Mariah Carey is the best ever and i really care for her she is just like us and has this beautiful voice and she looks so good she is the most beautiful person i ever seen. Keep on going Mariah and don´t ever chance. Mariah´s new album Charmbracelet is wonderful it sort of growns on you i didn´t like Rainbow or Glitter but this album Charmbracelet is telling me that she is back forget Glitter and listen to Charmbracelet she is making us her lambs again.

    #1's

After only 8 years in the music industry Mariah realized an album with all her number 1#,s singles and they were 14 that is just amazing no other female artist in history has ralized an album with all her number 1#´s after sush a short time and 14 songs that just shows us how talented Mariah is and she writes and produces all her own materials. This album has also 4 new songs like the catchy hip-hop tune Sweetheart with Jermaine Dupri,Whenever You Call with Brian MCKnight and When You Believe with Whitney Houston, also the theme from mahagony do you know where you´re going to. Mariah is my all time favorit diva with Celine Dion.

    This is a must-buy!

I LOVE all Mariah's Cds. Her songs, or most of them, at least, are inexplicably touching. She has quiet, nice songs, and songs that are a little more rappy, but they all have a good message. I highly recommend her Cds.

    Mariah is on Fire

If you could only have one of Mariah Carey's CD's this would be the one to pick. Explained by the title, #1's, all of Mariah's best songs are on this Cd. Since it does, in fact, have all of her best songs on it, you will not have to be bothered by the want to skip to the next track. You can listen to the whole CD all the way through, and you will be completely satisfied and feeling awesome. If you buy Mariah's #1's, you will not regret it. The is the best collaboration of Mariah's songs yet.
