Overview

Those who can’t do… teach.
This old adage has ended up being true with past books about teaching screenwriting. The authors of those books had no real industry experience as working screenwriters. Or their experience was so old, what they had to teach was not relevant to today’s movie industry.
“20 Basic Rules for Professional Screenwriting” is a primer written by a working screenwriting professional who knows how to craft a well written script that people in the movie industry will notice. His expertise comes from twenty years spent in the Hollywood studio system as a well-paid screenwriter and an independent film producer.
Richard Finney, is an award winning producer and screenwriter who has written screenplays for DreamWorks; Walt Disney; Sony; Warner Brothers; ABC; Fox TV; 20th Century Fox; Lion’s Gate; Lifetime; and CBS.
He has sold movie pitches in the six figures which has landed him on the cover of "Variety" and the "Hollywood Reporter." As an independent film producer he has twelve produced movies to his credit.
Finney tries to unlock his success for those who want to break into the movie industry as screenwriters. He also speaks to writers who are not getting the results with their previous screenwriting work. The words of wisdom in this primer are the first step toward understanding the process of professional screenwriting that could put you on the path to working in the movie industry.
This first book is over 12,000 words, and features a bonus chapter from the second book in the series, “19 Techniques for Professional Screenwriting.”

I have read hundreds of screenplays for film production companies and agencies, as well as the many of the most notable screenwriting how-to books when I started out. "20 Basic Rules for Professional Screenwriting" is concise, entertaining and easy to read, providing practical, yet critically important screenplay structure guideposts and tips for beginners and, frankly, great reminders for more experienced scriptwriters. Mr. Finney makes a living as a professional screenwriter and producer (as well as novelist), having worked with many of the major studios, networks and other production entities, so no wonder he’s produced what could and should be a textbook for a beginning screenwriting class.
