All Music Guide - Steve Leggett
The Platters merged Tin Pan Alley pop with just enough R&B grit to prefigure what came to be known as soul, and they were one of the most important vocal groups of the 1950s. Unfortunately, this 20-song set consists of re-recordings of the group's hits done for Musicor Records in the late '60s after Sonny Turner had replaced Tony Williams as the Platters' lead singer. These aren't horrible recordings by any means, but they still feel like a series of facsimiles standing in for the real deal.
