Overview

From Art Deco–inspired geometric designs to traditional checkerboard stripes and elaborate motifs, this guide helps crafters rediscover crochet with more than 200 fabulous block patterns. Employing traditional styles and contemporary colors, crocheted blocks inspire crafters to create a dynamic palette of color, pattern, and texture by mixing, matching, and combining. Step-by-step instructions accompany each pattern, along with stunning photographs that encourage crocheters to explore a range of color combinations and coordinates. A directory of blocks is cross-referenced with symbols that describe the techniques used and the degree of difficulty, and each pattern is designed so that finished blocks are the same size when they are worked in yarn of the same weight. A useful refresher course of crochet stitches and techniques is included, as are patterns for edgings and instructions on making fringes to finish off afghans in style.

Library Journal
Eaton (Crochet Basics) has collected a bright mix-and-match collection of 200 crocheted blocks, including granny squares, geometric patterns, textured patterns, and blocks with central 3-D motifs. Actually, there are only 128 distinct squares, as several identical squares are shown in alternate color schemes. Information for each block includes round-by-round or row-by-row instructions, a full-color photo, cross references to other blocks you might mix and match with a given block, a list of yarns and colors used, and a symbol representing the level of difficulty of the pattern. A fabulous addition to public library creative crochet collections. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    Excellent Reference & Idea Book

Great block patterns, easily described, and ranked for difficulty. Certainly the foundation for many great projects!

    Great variety, worth a read

I recently acquired this book. I like that it offers a mix of blocks from beginner to intermediate so as my skills grow, I am able to branch out. The author also includes a section showing examples of afghans using different blocks. Each pattern also has a color guide showing the yarns used in the sample. At the back, it tells you the manufacturer of the yarn (very handy for those of us that are sometimes overwhelmed by the number of yarns available). One thing I did notice was that there are not 200 different blocks in the book. The first 100 are all different, where the rest of the blocks are a few different patterns and different color combos of those patterns. I would guess there are around 130 different patterns and the rest are variations of the same patterns. Overall, I think it's a good book and I have a lot of ideas from reading it.

    Create a Unique Blanket

I absolutely could not live without this book. It is the first one I consult when starting a project. With 200 DIFFERENT blocks to choose from I can design countless blankets and thus make each gift unique. The photos are close enough to see detail while the pattern directions are crystal clear. As mandatory to any crocheter's library as a stitch guide.

    Great variety of designs!

If you want to make gorgeous crocheted afghans/throws, but you are tired of the boring old school designs in many pattern books, this is your best option. I loved the wide variety of contemporary designs and the gorgeous afghan ideas at the front of the book.

    Very helpful book!

I had seen a blanket in a magazine that was squared knitted in different colors with each square being a different pattern. I was able to knit some squares but in a heavy blanket, they are going to pull and the design may be lost. I decided instead to crochet the squares but I needed some ideas for patterns since I have mostly clothing patterns. This book is geared for blanket squares so the patterns are not lacy for the most part. The instructions are well described for the beginner but there are many fun patterns for more experienced handcrafters. Each pattern also has complimentary square ideas so you can put a blanket together with squares that will hold up with each other.

    A good book to have

This is a good book to have for crocheters that want to experiment with different techniques. I am making a sampler blanket and needed some more ideas about different blocks. I saw this book and knew I had to buy it. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because there is not 200 different blocks in here. It is actually more like 100. They use a lot of the same block types but with different colors. It is still a good book for ideas though and over all I am glad that I bought it.

    Knitter really likes it

I really like this book, I have made several afghans from it. I especially liked the very short portion on color theory, which I have not previously seen in any knitting/crochet book--it is only about 2 pp but it really helped me with design. The best thing about this book is that all of the squares fit together (if your gauge is consistent) so it truly is mix and match. I have "trouble" following patterns to completion--I have a little bit of a rebellious nature and do not like following rules which unfortunately includes rigidly following patterns--so this book gave me enough structure without being stifling and I finished a number of projects (instead of trying to modify something, ripping it out 3x then getting tired of it). It is true, some of the square patterns are the same square with different color, but that is not the majority of the squares (although I did not really find the same to be true for the knitting block book), & it was useful to me in that it showed how different color themes can be worked, even colors that I thought would not look right together. As soon as 200 More Crochet Blocks comes out, I will be getting it (Hint, Hint, Ms. Eaton...).

    Structured Creativity

This is a great book! It teaches about colors and design and permits endless variability. I have made a bunch of blankets from the patters in this book the blankets seem to go by so quickly b/c there is always something new to consider. The bonus is that it takes some of the tedious chance out of projects you design yourself all the squares are mix & match, so no matter which ones you pick, they will pretty much fit together at the end.

    Very Helpful

Great stuff. This book really perked up my stitching group and helped us find block patterns for our group-effort afghan. I think it is completely worth the money spent, and so do 3 members of my group. Excellent instructions, huge variety, great value. Rock!

    Short & sweet!

This little book revitalized my interest in knitting/crocheting after a lull. The colors are very modern & I enjoyed the section on color theory. This book provides enough ideas & details to design a very unique, fun, fast-paced project without starting from absolute scratch. The book is so colorful, it is also really fun to just browse through it again & again (like a kaleidescope you can turn into a cozy 3-D project). Little afghan squares are easy to transport & can be tucked away nicely (for example, in your favorite Coach bag). The book provides the basis for a myriad of projects that are easy to pick up & set down & small enough to bring along as an emergency back up activity for unexpected waits/delays.

HO HUM - what a bore.

I'm sorry to say how disappointing this book is. I crochet at least an hour every evening as relaxation after very busy work days so I'm constantly on the lookout for new crochet patterns plus I adapt existing patterns to my own variations. I was hoping this book would give me some new, really interesting & challenging patterns. The blocks are boring; the only thing of interest are the edgings but the book is just not worth the money spent.

    No more one block afghans!

I love this book! No more guesswork if you want to make a block afghan using more then one type of block! I am making lovely afghans for my three little grand daughters using this book and their favorite colors. A bonus, is if you get bored with making one block, just go to another type and work until you are ready to go to another one. Charts are included to help you make variences!
