Overview

It makes no sense to discuss 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane, the first album by Russian dance-pop duo t.A.T.u., without focusing on the gimmick, since that gimmick is the band. Of course, gimmicks have always been central to pop music, including much of the greatest pop music, but few have felt as tawdry as t.A.T.u.. Which is, of course, that the girls are teenage lesbians. Or to shoddily paraphrase Charlie Sheen in Being John Malkovich, "they're hot teenage lesbians, and how can you not be into that?" Well, it's easy not to be into it when Julia Volkova and Lena Katina appear to have been run through a marketing processor so they could become two Sapphic tarts who sing songs with suggestive titles like "Not Gonna Get Us," "Show Me Love," and "All the Things She Said" (it's likely a coincidence that the latter two share titles with songs by Robyn and Simple Minds, respectively, but perhaps not), while covering that perennial anthem of tortured unrequited love and lust, the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?" (it was strong enough to withstand Love Spit Love's cover; it's strong enough to weather this). Perhaps this would have been fun if the music were fizzy, trashy, and disposable, the way Britpop novelty Shampoo was on its lark We Are Shampoo. Instead, it's heavy, portentous Europop, often helmed by Trevor Horn, and badly sung by two cute girls with annoying squawks for voices. With those relentless, gloomy beats and those voices that cut against the grain, it's easy to concentrate on nothing but the gimmick, because it's more fun to talk about Russian teenage lesbians than listen to this noisy, oppressive murk. Even then, you'll feel unclean, given the shamelessness of the exploitation in this whole crass, commercial enterprise. [The album was released in multiple versions for different international markets; however, the bonus content was a generally similar jumble of remixes and video content.]

I must say this album is very much okay in my book. The two most well known singles, Not Gonna Get Us and All the Things She Said, are good songs to hear once in a while. On a whole, the rest is just "eh" in my view. My one issue is the way they use their false image to attract attention. I think I would but this even if they didn't, because it truly has good potential.

The music is good. Some of the songs are good especially the recognizable ones from Clowns, Not Gonna Get Us and etc. While the album is good it was also just okay.

I enjoyed listening to 200km/h In The Wrong Lane. I only listen to punk music but when I first heard "All The Things She Said" I immediately fell in love with that song. As I heard the album I noticed that each song got better and better. It's amazing how their songs sound great in both English and Russian. I just know that they will soon be at the top of the charts and will continue to make great music in their career. Well, I have to go listen to my TATU album some more, bye!

Talk about amazing. These girls are definetely worth listening to. A couple months ago my friend talked me into downloading one of their songs. I caved in and did so. I listened to just a little clip of them, and I was immediately hooked. These girls have amazing voices, and you can definetely tell their heart and souls are in their music. I also think it's awesome that they are open about their sexuality. These girls aren't ashamed, and I believe that's awesome! These girls have awesome tracks like "All the things she said" a nice cover of "How soon is now", and one of my favs "Malchik Gay". If you feel like putting yourself in a good mood, and feel like dancing, then I definetely recommend this CD! Get them now, it's well worth it!

I was hooked on t.A.T.u. ever sense I first heard their catchy single "All The Things She Said". Their CD is a new, refreshing blend of pop and techno delicately crafted around their innocent voices. This record could easily be labeled as senseless bubble gum pop, if it wasn't for the true sincerity that comes across in the duo¿s singing. Every Track on this CD is worth listening to. The only one bad thing is that you end up craving for more of their infectious music at the conclusion of the record. At least their video is featured in the enhanced version of the CD. The scenes of the two showing their love towards one another against all odds is enough of a reason for anyone to get this CD. It's about time we see something new arrive in our states.

When I first saw this at the store, I knew I had to get it. Believe me, it was worth it. I'm used to listening to songs in languages I don't speak, so the two on the album were fine with me (there were english versions of them too). There's something to praise about every song: the lyrics, the vocals, the composition, or whatnot. Better yet, no two songs sound the same. Each song has its own distinctive sound so the albums not a drone of pop/techno/rock all the way through. I've been overdosing on their music for the past few days and I'm probably not going to stop anytime soon.

This c.d. is great, i'm into just about every type of music but usually i'm not that into "pop", however this album is a winner. whether you like Alanis Morsette or club music there is something on this album that you're gonna love. The Russian language is beautiful and so are the lyrics. We don't seem to get many Russian bands out here either so i strongly recommend this album to EVERYONE!

The album t.a.T.u is definetly a keeper. Thier unique styles of vocal arrangements is what keeps the listener intrigued. Not to mention that the song All The Things She Said is about thier love for eachother. I think it is a great way to relate to othe peoples sexuality through song. I personally like the cd and I would definetly reccomend it othe listeners.

This CD is one of the best CDs I have ever bought. I love all of the tracks but my favorite would have to be Malchik Gay. The bass line and tatu's voices blend so well. This cd is a hard mix of pop and techno. Also, the lyrics are unbelievable. They have such meaning. Great job tatu! I highly suggest this cd to anyone.

The mass of five-star reviews here is clearly the result of a guerrilla marketing campaign. Believe me, while good by teeny pop standards, this record can hardly be seen as the "best cd ever". The original russian version is better, though the production on the newer release is tighter. The Smiths cover is awful, but that was to be expected. Good song to pick though.

So beautiful and perfect I'd be willing to go through a Soviet childhood to understand the original versions of this exquisite music. I was hooked after hearing a single one of their songs on the radio. I'll admit I'm an mp3 junkie and I haven't bought a CD in months, but after hearing a few of their songs on the computer I absolutely had to have their album. Unlike most over commercialized CDs out there, there are NO filler tracks on this disk, every single song is great ¿ at least as good as ¿all the things she said.¿ It is so good you find yourself randomly thinking about it in the shower, at work, all through the day - it's a feeling I'd honestly compare to having just met a girl. Simply amazing.

Silence. Suddenly the boom of drums and bass blend and you're immediately entranced. t.A.T.u, aka tatu, is on of the best groups I've heard in a long while. Although compared to their Russian, this cd has been slightly shifted towards pop, they still hold strong in electronic-rock intensity. In loo of today's Britney Spears and American Idol's I'm finally hearing a group that will be huge and it will be OK to like them! t.A.T.u rocks my world with their atomically high voices, and hearing soft whispers of "Mama, Papa, forgive me," how could anyone resist these Russian lolitas?!

t.A.T.u. offered America a brand new taste in the pop scene. With their beautiful lyrics and provacative videos they hooked thousands of us. The sound of their music is different from other European artists already released here in the U.S. They mix pop with techno/dance and with their light, airy vocals who wouldn't be entranced by this mix? Their lyrics open the mind to the limits of love. They are rising stars and I look forward to hearing more from them. Buy the cd, you'll be hooked too.

From start to finish "200 km/h in the Wrong Lane" is beautiful and intresting. A simple glance the CD appears to be just another top-of-the-charts pop band screaming teeny-bopper love songs in high pitched voices. But upon closer inspection you will find t.A.T.u. to be much deeper then that. Unlike so many other trendy pop bands complaining about their lack of relationships t.A.T.u. delivers a much more powerful message. Their opening song "Not Gonna Get Us" tells a story about running away under cover of night to never return. "Nothing can stop us. Not now, I love you." Julia proclaims, saying that nothing can ever stop them or slow them down now that they have each other. Their second song, "All the Things She Said" tells about discovering the love of a girl and being so in love while everyone around says it's wrong and the hardships of having to confront misunderstanding parents. The music video is included(via enhancement) on the CD, and shows the the two girls on one side of a metal fence facing family, friends, and everyone else on the other side. Somewhere around halfway into the video the girls break into a passionate kiss and face their crowd with daring eyes. A fitting video to "All the Things She Said". "30 Minutes" begins with laughter and a small ticking sound in the background, Julia provides vocals in this slow ballad about a huge decision she has only an half and hour to make. The piano adds a vibrant and beautiful feel to the emotional side of the song, while Juia's voice flows smoothly and adds wonderful texture. Half way through the cd we are greeted by a wonderous cover of "How Soon is Now?" originally performed by The Smiths. This song in particular always excites me. "You shut your mouth. How dare you say, that I go about things the wrong way. I'm human and I need to be loved, just like everybody else does." This line always touches me, I always feel that someone has just accused Julia's lesbian lifestyle of being wrong and this is her response to them. With a wonderfully flavored acoustic guitar sound "Malchik Gay" is the story of a girl falling in love with a gay boy and telling him how she longs to hold him and love him, and how he she can't get her longing for him out of her heart. Wanting him to just stay with her, she promises to be all he needs if he will only stay. Yet another amazing song on the cd, that always seems to leave me breathless is "Show Me Love" starting with a phone being picked up followed by a conversation between the girls in russian the song talks about the stupid arguments and tricks so many relationships seem to contain and cries to just show the pure love felt for each other instead of ending it with a bitter fight. The last song in english "Stars" features Lena singing about her sitting in the car crying because of the hate everyone seems to feel for their relationship. A nice touch is Julia saying a long fast paced piece of the song in russian throughout the song. A wonderful 11 tracks long, the CD is enhanced and also features "All the Things She Said" and "Not Gonna Get US" in the original russian versions as well as an extended version of "Show Me Love" and a love song about bearing the pain of secrets called "Clowns(Do You See Me Now?)". Julia and Lena promise a plethora of excellent songs and "200 km/h in the Wrong Lane" delivers. These lesbian russian pop stars definitley are the "real deal", they show alot of promise and I expect to see alot from them in the future.

¿Okay just so everyone makes sure, everyone knows they are Russian Music Artist Right? We dont get too many of them Tatu is Great Russian band to my thinking & I love the Russian music but the Translation to the English is not so good, I mean dont get me wrong they can sing beautifully & they are very sexy but some of the structure/layout of the words in the music are bad. I think that if they were to try and work with what they are trying to say in other english words. I just hope the get situated so the next cd, will be more attractive to the non-understanding crowd. But I give them FULL support because I love Russia, I love Russians, and I would love to see them rise to the top...

If you haven¿t been trapped on a secluded island for the past few years you should have already heard of the newest Russian sensation t.A.T.u. Not only have these amazing girls sold millions of their first album (200 po vstrechnoi, in Russian) but now they have set out to conquer America! With the debut of their second album (this one in English) contains both energetic and enjoyable tracks, fresh dance club beats power most the album, but there are a few slower more meaningful tracks that one cant help but get hooked on, and not to forget the cover of the smiths `how soon is now¿ which in my opinion is a much needed improvement on the original. There is one outstanding theme to this album and that is love. Two girls possessing voices that of angels, sing about love; Love for what you may be wondering¿well, their love for each other. No, these are not your regular, innocent popstars. Yulia and Lena of t.A.T.u. sing music with much more meaning, they have a message to send, and if you want to get it, buy the album 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane out now in stores near you!

This album is amazing. Their songs are from their heart; to each other. They're not ashamed of themselves, and I admire them for it. People accepted the truth and listen to their music. Their music is different from other singers; they really mean what they sing, the words and music come from their soul. My friend let me listen to this song and I was hooked. They're my favorite band! Especially the song "Not Gonna Get Us": if you really listen to the words, it sounds so deep, so emotional. I feel the same as them, just maybe not in the SAME way, but I really do want to be honest and run away where no one can find me, it sounds so peaceful. The songs are a mixture of anger and love. It's wonderful and it's the bomb! Go t.A.T.u!

For all you electronica lovers I advise this to be added to your collection. Even if you dont know how to speak Russian it still has a cool tech beat.
