2000 Watts [Bonus Track]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
With his coffee-brown skin, gleaming bald head, and muscular build, Tyrese is a fine specimen of masculinity. You might just call this model, actor Tyrese has the lead role in John Singleton's summer 2001 urban drama Baby Boy, and former MTV VJ the Michael Jordan of R&B. Physical attributes aside, however, Tyrese can sing his well-defined butt off. On his sophomore disc, 2000 Watts, Tyrese continues where his eponymous 1998 disc left off -- making the fellas jealous and the ladies weak in the knees. Proving that flattery will get you everywhere, the disc gets off to a jiggy start with the club-thumper "I Like Them Girls," on which Tyrese gives props to "them ...

Proving that flattery will get you everywhere, the disc gets off to a jiggy start with the club-thumper "I Like Them Girls," on which Tyrese gives props to "them girls with the small waist and the big ole' hips." And from there on, the album -- named in tribute to Tyrese's hometown of Watts, California -- gets even better. The soaring, piano-heavy ballad "For Always" is cut from the same mold as the sentimental chart-topper "Sweet Lady" from Tyrese. By working with veteran songwriters and producers such as Babyface the crossover-ready mid-tempo track "There for Me Baby", Jermaine Dupri the funky-beat looped "Off the Heazy", and Rodney Jerkins the stuttered-beat, up-tempo "I Ain't the One", Tyrese showcases his electrifying star power on 2000 Watts.
All Music Guide - Jon Azpiri
It would be easy to dismiss Tyrese as just another pop pretty boy. Looking at his previous work as a model and VJ, it's hard not to classify him as a musician more concerned with commercial success than any real musical artistry. Listening to 2000 Watts, even the most cynical of R&B fans would have to admit that Tyrese has real talent. Flanked by a series of heavyweight producers such as Rodney Jerkins and Jermaine Dupree, Tyrese delivers a series of ballads and uptempo numbers that are bound to appeal to fans of BET and TRL, respectively. His first single, "I Like Them Girls" is a bouncing homage to women. Equally impressive is "There for Me (Baby)," a melodic ballad produced by Babyface. After a relative successful debut album, 2000 Watts demonstrates that Tyrese is a legitimate R&B talent with a lot more skills than a lot of people expected. [BMG's 2008 edition included one bonus track on CD-ROM.]
