Barnes & Noble - Jenny Eliscu
Billy Joel's sold-out New Year's Eve concert at New York City's Madison Square Garden was one of the priciest rock-'n'-roll events ringing in Y2K, with fans plunking down between $100 and $1000 to get into a new year's state of mind. At those rates, hometown hero Joel had to deliver as many hits as his fingers could stand to pound out on the ivories. And that's precisely what he does. This two-CD set is packed with more than 20 Joel classics, along with a few novelties such as the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman" and Sly and the Family Stone's "Dance to the Music." The history-minded "We Didn't Start the Fire," which recounts the biggest moments of the century, sounds...

This two-CD set is packed with more than 20 Joel classics, along with a few novelties such as the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman" and Sly and the Family Stone's "Dance to the Music." The history-minded "We Didn't Start the Fire," which recounts the biggest moments of the century, sounds particularly relevant here, and so, of course, does "Auld Lang Syne." On the first disc, he does bang-up runs through "Big Shot," "My Life," and "Angry Young Man," his voice and backing band in peak form. The second disc hits a slight lull early on, but Joel recovers with an epic version of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant." This is only Joel's second live album, and although it does share several tracks with his first live recording, 1992's KOHUEPT, 2000 YEARS presents a more expansive look at Joel's talent for blending rock energy with Tin Pan Alley sophistication. For fans who missed the show due to dollars or distance, this is a fine reminder that Joel is still pop music's best Piano Man.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Among the major artists celebrating the end of the 20th century with a New Year's Eve blowout was Billy Joel, who set up shop at Madison Square Garden and played a marathon show lasting nearly three hours. It was quite a feat for a man who claimed that he had retired from pop music, but the last New Year's Eve gig of the 20th century offers an artist a chance to sum up either the past century or their career. Joel decided to do both, throwing in a few classic rock covers at the end of a show that offered a whirlwind spin through his lengthy back catalog. Several songs from the concert are absent on 2000 Years: The Millennium Concert, the audio record of the event, but that's because it's impossible to squeeze three hours onto two discs. That means such staples as "Piano Man" are absent, but they're not particularly missed, since such early classics as "Summer Highland Falls," "The Ballad of Billy the Kid," and "I've Loved These Days" take their place. These moments are what make the record worthwhile for serious Joel fans, since that's where he sounds relaxed and emotionally vested. The rest of the album is pure spectacle, as it builds to a midnight crescendo of "Auld Lang Syne," which gives way to oldies covers and hits. There are certain lapses in pacing that slow the momentum, and Joel's voice does stretch mighty thin at some points. These are the sort of things that are easy to ignore in concert, when the experience is all-important, but on record, it does diminish the overall effect, even for hardcore Joel fans. It's often enjoyable, but the end result is a bit underwhelming, which means that 2000 Years is more like a souvenir of a passed moment than it was intended to be.

The best Billy Joel concert on disc!

If you never get a chance to see Billy Joel in concert, buy this disc. The disc has a lot of Joel's greatest hits, and some of the live versions of songs such as ''Goodnight Saigon'' and ''Angry young man'' are better then the recorded versions. On the whole, I'd say this is a good concert disc to have.

    One More Time Billy

This is Billy Joel at his best! Touring for his last time, he lets it all loose. Combining his big hits with some of the littler known stuff he shows what the 20 years of playing have amounted to. Just buy this CD now!

    Wish I was there!

Seen Billy Joel at Wembley London some time ago and am a huge fan. Have been patiently waiting for this CD to arrive from US for weeks. Well worth the wait. As I expected the CD covers all aspects of his work and some great covers too. It is nice to know that whilst I was freezing to death in Princes Street Edinburgh seeing in the New Year this was happening in NY. Whatever the ticket prices it would have been worth it. Only 2 complaints, No Piano Man and No bells ringing in the new Year, Ok so I can't have everything!!

2000 years from beginning to end

Any long time fan would not miss adding this to their collection, but new fans will love it too! Billy Joel and his band have never sounded better. This CD set includes many songs that have not been performed live in many years, and others that are great to hear even if you have heard them millions of times before. The audiance has a lot of energy, and Billy, and the band feed well off it.

Hey Billy, it's Still Rock and Roll to us:)

Billy Joel is a legend, plain and simple. Not a legend in our time or his own, but in all times. This album is a great representation of Billy's live show. I love the conversations he has with the audience and I am glad they included them. I was lucky enough to see Billy last April in Philadelphia. The song picks here are great. Of course, not every favorite is here, but there are enough to make me happy with it...I bought it on Monday @ midnight and was very impressed even on the first listen. Some may complain that there's no 'Piano Man.' There is not a live version of this song officially released. But '2000 Years' doesn't really need 'Piano Man.' The new record is wonderfully recorded and Billy plays his hits and some obscure songs. Like a fine wine, Billy Joel improves with age. I hope he doesn't stop touring. Cause it's still rock and roll to me. Peace!

    Billy J is the best!

As a fellow piano man, I've always looked up to Billy Joel. He is my biggest inspiration. I was unable to attend this concert but now I can relive the magic thanks to this awesome tape. His version of 'Honky Tonk Woman' blows away the original. I can't wait to put on my sandals and 'Dance to the Music' all summer long!!

    WHAT A BLAST!!!!!!!

I WENT NEW YEARS EVE!!! only braved the $150 seats though. still it was the best concert. he is amazing. since the cd is a live recording this will definitly not be a disappointment. i have seen him 8 times and never have i seen a more enthousiastic performance. also here's a side note....dance to the music is sung by sax player MARK RIVERA who is an amazing musician himself. you've heard him play all the sax parts in peter gabriel's sledgehammer and he's worked with foreigner and blue oyster cult..enjoy!!

Great CD, no Billy collection is complete without it!

I'm so glad they decided to release this, Billy's last concert, on CD. Though he beginning to show signs of aging, his concert was youthful and amazing. I would highly recommend this CD!
