Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lisa Colozza Cocca
The classic science fiction tale of adventure under the sea is abridged in this forty-eight page book, half of which are full page illustrations. In 1867, French scientist Pierre Aronnax and his servant Conseil board the Abraham Lincoln, a frigate under the command of Captain Farragut. Many ships have gone missing and the US government has hired Aronnax to investigate what is going on in the seas. When the ship finally meets up with the creature, Aronnax, Conseil, and ship crew member Ned Land are tossed overboard. The trio are captured by Captain Nemo and his crew and held on the Nautilus. As a captive, Aronnax has a chance to explore the ship that can travel underwater and to learn about the creatures that live deep in the seas. The book is divided into sections with headings rather than chapters. Each section has one to two pages of text and one to two full-page illustrations. Several of the main adventures of the original tale appear in this book: the giant pearl, the shark attack, the discovery of Atlantis, and the giant squid. A brief biography of Jules Verne appears on the last page. The book is leveled for fourth grade readers and uses contemporary language, making it accessible to reluctant or struggling readers. This extremely brief version, unfortunately, lacks the overall mood of Verne's original and fails to convey the political themes of the original.
