Reviewer: Bruce E Jarrell, MD (University of Maryland School of Medicine)
Description: This is a compilation of literature surveys that contains abstracts from journal articles thought to be important contributions in the past year. Each abstract is accompanied by editorial comments on the significance of the article.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a current view of the broad practice of surgery.
Audience: This book would be excellent for residents, practicing surgeons, and other professionals caring for surgical diseases.
Features: The publisher surveys over 500 journals and selects critical articles published in those journals. For this book, articles from 68 of those journals were used. Several hundred journal articles were then abstracted and placed in a logical format to compose 14 chapters. Each chapter has a several page editorial introduction, which is an overview of the contained articles and reasons chosen for further discussion. Each individual article has a citation, introduction, methods, results, and conclusions followed by appropriate editorial comments. Critical tables and graphs are also included.
Assessment: This year book continues to represent an excellent concept of combining important contributions to the literature with editorial comment. This version is well executed in that critical issues in surgery were chosen for the article topics, excellent supportive articles were chosen and the editorial comments are appropriate and understandable. This book continues to be an excellent way for surgeons to keep current with their field, particularly from a broad point of view. I would recommend it strongly for anyone who wants to keep current in new approaches in surgery.
