    Disappointing

Last year, I had the 2005 KNIT-a-Day Calendar and was thoroughly impressed and delighted by the plethora of unique knitting patterns that I enjoyed daily. Although I'm not a huge knitter, I enjoyed seeing the patterns that I could adapt to crochet. I though I would give my ultimate love, crocheting, a try, and asked for the 2006 Crochet-a-Day Calendar. It was not what I expected - not by a long shot. Not only was the picture quality small, blurry, and poorly shot, but I wasn't impressed with the ammount of patterns that the calendar offered. There were numerous squares that probably took up 20 days that you are supposed to fashion into an afghan in the end, but for people who aren't doing that, they're pretty pointless. I was also disappointed by the lack of garments or accessories that the calendar seemed to promise. There were a few odd hats that I would never consider making, and the lack of sweaters/ clothing was a let down as I flipped through the days. Overall, I guess I can't be bummed about only getting 3 good patterns out of the whole 365 days for such a cheap price, but I think that Annie Modesitt could have done a much better job. Why is it that a woman who publishes primarily KNITTING books and writes KNITTING patterns comes out with a CROCHET calendar? Something just doesn't seem right there...

The Only Crochet Book You'll Need This Year

My jaw nearly dropped to the ground when I opened this treasure box of crochet gems. I practically drooled over pages and pages of wonderful patterns for every skill level and made with every type of yarn from thread to worsted to wire to plastic bag strips. A few of my favorites are: The No-Pattern Spiral Sweater,a yummy circle of yarn of that cleverly attaches the sleevesn with no sewing, Swan Symphony Doily, a fasinating doily with 3-D swans that look like they're taking a drink from a pond,Crochet Thread Teddy Bears, teensy-weensy palm-of-your-hand urcine toys, Ikabana Wrist Corsage,a free-form like body decoration with dangly bits, Sushi Pillow, a giant non-edible lounger, Fairy Filet, a beautifully etherial challange, and Chain Delicate Bracelet, a wire- worked jeweled specimen that looks like a millon bucks but is deceptivly simple to make. There are also tons of original squares, afghans, ponchos, shrugss, shawls, toys, kitchen and bath items, hats, gloves, jewelry, sweatres, well, you get my drift, A LOT!!!! Editor, Annie Modsitt did a yeoman's job on putting this all together. There is good value here, too. Since some of the patterns are long, they get an extra day or two, but 245 patterns for less than $14.00 is outstanding! I've paid $7.00 for just one pattern in a craft store. Snap up this puppy fast! I can hardly wait for the 2007 edition!
