Overview

Paul Gauguin created a rich personal mythology that drew from European classical and religious traditions as well as Buddhism, anthropology, and Oceanic legends. Through a range of subjects—self-portraits, figural compositions, still lifes, and landscapes—Gauguin (French, 1848-1903) revealed himself to be both an inventive storyteller and an artistic innovator. The twelve sumptuous, colorful paintings reproduced here include Two Tahitian Women, Haystacks in Brittany, and Christ in the Garden of Olives.
