In the preface of ""Six Dreams"", Qiong Yao wrote that after finishing her first novel ""Outside the Window"", she found it very difficult to write a long novel and wanted to find a different way to write several separate or combined novellas. So she collected information on six dreams and used an old man to tell the prologue of the story, unfolding six different love stories. Poetry and love reflected in history, eternal sorrow in the storms of the times.

All six stories narrate tragic love events that occurred in modern Chinese history, presenting the unfortunate experiences of different women's love and marriage in the context of the transformation of modern Chinese society, culture, and economy, as well as under the shadow of war.

琼瑶，原名陈喆，一九三八年生于四川成都，出身于书香门第。一九四九年，随父陈致平由大陆到台湾生活，开始写作生涯，随后进入电影、电视剧制作行业。
Qiong Yao, originally named Chen Zhe, was born in Chengdu, Sichuan in 1938 and came from a scholarly family. In 1949, she followed her father Chen Zhiping from mainland China to Taiwan to start her writing career, and later entered the film and television production industry.
琼瑶十六岁时以心如为笔名发表小说《云影》，二十五岁时出版了第一部小说《窗外》。多年来，笔耕不辍，代表作有《烟雨濛濛》《还珠格格》《一帘幽梦》《庭院深深》等，并有多部经典作品被改编为电影、电视剧，影响至深，成为一代人的青春回忆。
At the age of sixteen, Qiong Yao published the novel ""Cloud Shadow"" under the pen name ""Xinru"", and at the age of twenty-five, she published her first novel ""Outside the Window"".
