Overview

Unparalleled in scope and quality and designed for reading aloud and sharing, this splendid anthology brings together some of the most memorable and beloved children's books of our time. Here are classics such as Madeline and Curious George; contemporary bestsellers such as Guess How Much I Love You and The Stinky Cheese Man; Caldecott Medal winners such as Make Way for Ducklings and Where the Wild Things Are; and family favorites such as Goodnight Moon, The Sneetches, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Alexander & The Terrible, No Good Very Bad Day, soon to be a motion picture.

The selections range from concept books and wordless books to picture books and short read-aloud stories, and represent the complete array of childhood themes and reading needs: ABCs, number and color books, stories about going to bed and going to school; tales about growing up, siblings, parents, and grandparents; animal stories, fantasies; fables; magical stories; stories about everyday life—and more.

This beautiful edition includes a recommended list of books published in the time since this anthology's original compilation, including Caldecott Honors Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! and Olivia, with descriptive annotations intended to guide parents to these new books and new voices of the 21st century. Also included are an introduction from editor Janet Schulman, capsule biographies of the 62 writers and artists represented in the collection, color-coded running heads indicating age levels, and indexes. As a gift, a keepsake, and a companion in a child's first steps toward a lifelong love of reading, The 20th Century Children's Book Treasury belongs in every family's bookcase.

A collection of picture book stories by such authors as Ludwig Bemelmans, Ezra Jack Keats, and Maurice Sendak.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Quick—name a favorite picture book or children's story. Chances are, it's one of the 44 selections included—Pages read like a Who's Who for children's literature—Frog and Toad, Ferdinand the Bull, Winnie-the-Pooh, Frances the badger, Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel, Babar and Curious George—This treasure trove is worth its weight in gold."—Publishers Weekly
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Think of your favorite children's stories and you can be pretty sure that several of them will be represented in this collection. Numerous award-winning classics such as Freight Train, Make Way for Ducklings and The Snowy Day as well as more contemporary offerings such as Owen, Stellaluna, and Guess How Much I Love You are included. Adults can enjoy rereading the stories from their childhood and share the tales and illustrations with visiting grandchildren, nieces or nephews. It is also a wonderful book for a classroom. There are notes about the authors and illustrators, an index, symbols that depict suggested age levels for each story, and an age appropriate list at the end of the book.
Elizabeth Devereaux
The volume is handsome, the color reproductions sparkline and the selections unimpeachable. . . -- The New York Times Book Review

Wonderful collection of stories for children of all ages!

This book was purchased for us when our son was born 5 1/2 years ago. We started reading stories from the book when he was a baby and we still read stories today. Some of the stories we read to our son as a baby, he uses now as he is learning to read himself. When we travel it is so nice to grab just one book and put it in our backpack instead of having to peruse the bookshelf trying to determine the best books to take. We have used this book so much that the binding is starting to come apart ~ we truly love it!

I recently purchased this same book to give to a friend who is expecting a baby. She told me how much she appreciates the book as it has many of her favorite stories as well as her husbands favorites. Certainly her soon to be born child will enjoy hearing the great stories too.

a must have for any child's library!

i was told about this book by a friend and purchased it sight unseen. i am beyond pleased with this book! it has stories for different levels of readers (color coded) and therefore has the capability of 'growing' with the child. not one that will just sit on the shelf!

We love this book. There are so many stories for different levels or reading; it keeps parents and children happy. There are stories in there that my boys would not choose from the library but loved because they were in this book. It was a gift to us and we have given it as a gift to many others.

    Great selection of children's books!

I chose this as a gift for a newborn baby because we love the copy that we own! I like to give books to new parents and let them know how important it is to read to their children (even into their teen years, if you can). This treasury is a great selection of children's books and a great start to a child's library.

    Highly recommended!

Highly recommended. Even the parents of the children I purchased the book for enjoyed re-reading favorite stories from their own childhood. Having the original illustrations is also a plus!

Enjoy different stories in one book!

I love how this book includes a wide selection of great stories. All in one! It's nice to share these popular stories to your children that you grew up reading. I recommend this to children who like a book with a variety of choices to read from. They will enjoy the pictures and stories that have been known as our favorites!

    I Also Recommend:

    Haunting and Unforgettable

Never before have I felt the need to write a review of a book that I had recently read. This novel intrigues while man's inhumanity to man appalls.

Every one of us who has read about WWII and the post war era has certainly pictured Russia during the Stalin years-perhaps the years of greatest repression and brutality in modern times- however no other novel has drawn the reader in so. Tom Rob Smith has drawn his characters so very well that we cannot help but feel their pain, emotion and anguish.

This is an amazing first novel. I look forward to Mr. Smith's next offering.

A wonderful anthology; I highly recommend it!

I borrowed this from the library when my 2 year old grandaughter came to visit this summer. She loved it! We have to go get it whenever she comes or I go there. There are so many of the wonderful classics included. Some were already favorites (Madeline, Make Room for the Ducklings, Goodnight Moon) and now she has new ones she likes (Bedtime for Frances.) The stories are color coded for younger, middle, and older children; the book can be enjoyed by children of so many ages. I have purchased the book for her and her baby brother for Christmas and others for Christmas and baby shower gifts. This is a great book for any family's bookshelves!

    One of the best collections

As a preschool teacher, I was thrilled to find a collection that contanied many of the best children's books I know. To allow for so many great stories, some of the illistration are cut; however, I found the arrangements of the remaining artwork creative and little was lost. This is definately a great way to get all of the modern classics of liturature for the young child.

    The best children's book!

I am a book nut so when I had two kids, I really loaded up on children's books and this is my favorite! There are plenty of famous stories included as well as some wonderful, lessor known ones that I never would have discovered if it weren't for this book. I recommend it to all my friends and am buying a bunch for Christmas gifts this season!

    The kids love this book

Some critics have faulted this anthology for trimming a few of the pictures found in the original volumes. All I can say to these people is 'close enough.' I read to second and third graders at Lincoln School in Corvallis, Oregon. The reading room stocks several of the original volumes. I read the original volume and the kids follow along in this Treasury. They don't seem to notice the difference. They just love the book. Steve Kenney

    Great Buy For Your Child

I didn't have to buy 'Where the Wild Things Are, Goodnight Moon, Mike Mulligan' and tons of others becasue they're all here in this book! My sister is a teacher and says this is one of the best books she has seen for children. And my 21 month old just LOVES listening to daddy read every night. This is our favorite book despite the 200 plus books we have. You'll LOVE it!

Everyone I know loves this book!

This should be the first book you buy your child. It combines the very finest literature for beginning readers and stories to be read aloud. Most, if not all, of your favorite childhood books are included, as well as newer selections to share with your little one.
