Overview

Country gospel is distinct from the Afro-American-derived Southern gospel style that most think of when gospel is mentioned, although the two styles share many of the same songs and hymns. Country gospel is less intensely rhythmic, and draws its harmonies from Appalachian mountain singing, giving it the twang that marks it as solidly country, and in the case of bluegrass-gospel, it has turned back toward the mountain styles that make up its roots. This brief set (it pulls in at under 30 minutes) serves as a glancing introduction to country gospel, featuring a fine version of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" by George Jones, a stirring and unadorned "How Great Thou Art" from Loretta Lynn, and two impressive and hard-charging bluegrass-gospel pieces, Bill Monroe's "Lord Protect My Soul" and the Stanley Brothers' kinetic "Just a Little Talk with Jesus."
