Overview

Universal's 20th Century Masters collections have long served as a dependable introduction to many of popular music's great artists. The music of French national treasure Edith Piaf has been anthologized countless times in the years since her untimely death in 1963, and her best-known songs remain widely available. While her 20th Century Masters volume doesn't offer anything new, it does the trick in delivering a nice set of highlights from a career that spanned nearly four decades. Absolute classics like the bawdy "Milord," the triumphant "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," and the eternally romantic "La Vie en Rose" are considered some of the greatest songs ever to come out of France, and they represent a style of chanson and ballad singing that, in the early years of the 21st century, feels like an art form we're unlikely to hear again. This may not necessarily be the definitive Piaf compilation, but it's certainly a solid place to begin.
