All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The Millennium Collection: The Best of Lesley Gore gathers a dozen of Gore's hits, including the two-part soap opera of "It's My Party" and "Judy's Turn to Cry," the sweeping, melodramatic "You Don't Own Me," and lighthearted "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows." Though it's nowhere near as extensive as collections like It's My Party: The Mercury Anthology or Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows: The Best of Lesley Gore, The Millennium Collection does include slightly obscure tracks such as "The Look of Love," "My Town, My Guy and Me," and "California Nights," her last Top 20 hit from 1967. A good collection for casual fans, even at just 12 songs long, The Millennium ...

A pleasant blast from the past

My older sister would really know more about Lesley Gore than I would, as they were of a generation. But I recall hearing "It's My Party" on an old 45 that she received as part of a purchase of a mono hi-fi way back when, and that record's been one of my favorites since. This collection contains not only the seminal "It's My Party," but Gore's other hits, a small collection indeed from a career that spanned only a few years before she was drowned out in the rise of Woodstock-era music. That small collection, of course, forms a set of core songs that nobody who enjoyed early Sixties music should be without. The key songs (including "Judy's Turn to Cry," "You Don't Own Me," and "California Nights") surround several others that I've never heard of -- simply because they never received any airplay on the old Keener 14 back home in Battle Creek. Give this a checkout, and relive some old memories, or see just what your parents grooved to before you came along (grin).
