INTRODUCTION

I have the privilege of teaching leadership across the country and around the globe, and I often get the opportunity to talk with people who are attending one of my conferences for a second, third,
or even fourth time. At a recent conference here in the United States,
a man in his late fifties whom I had met several years before came up and spoke to me during a break. He grabbed my hand and shook it vigorously. "Learning leadership has changed my life," he said. "But I sure wish I had heard you twenty years ago."

"No, you don't," I answered with a chuckle.

"What do you mean?" he said. "I would have achieved so much more! If I had known these leadership principles twenty years ago,
I'd be in a totally different place in life. Your leadership laws have fueled my vision. They've given me the desire to learn more about leadership and accomplish my goals. If I'd learned this twenty years ago, I could have done some things that I had never even dreamed possible."

"Maybe you would have," I answered. "But twenty years ago, I wouldn't have been able to teach them to you. It has taken me my entire lifetime to learn and apply the laws of leadership to my life."

As I write this, I am fifty-one years old. I've spent more than thirty years in professional leadership positions. I've founded four companies.
And I focus my time and energy on doing what makes a positive impact in the lives of people. But I've also made a lot of mistakes along way--more than most people I know. Every success and every failure has been an invaluable lesson in what it means to lead.

As I travel and speak to organizations and individuals, people frequently ask me to define the essentials of leadership. "If you were to take everything you've learned about leadership over the years and boil it down into a short list," they ask, "what would it be?"

This book is my answer to that often-asked question. It has taken me a lifetime to learn these 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. My desire is to communicate them to you as simply and clearly as possible.
And it sure won't hurt if we have some fun along the way.

One of the most important truths I've learned over the years is this: Leadership is leadership, no matter where you go or what you do. Times change. Technology marches forward. Cultures vary from place to place. But the true principles of leadership are constant--whether you're looking at the citizens of ancient Greece, the Hebrews in the Old Testament, the armies of the last two hundred years, the rulers of modern Europe, the pastors in local churches, or the businesspeople of today's global economy. Leadership principles stand the test of time. They are irrefutable.

As you read the following chapters, I'd like you to keep in mind four ideas:

  1. The laws can be learned. Some are easier to understand and apply than others, but every one of them can be acquired.

  2. The laws can stand alone. Each law complements all the others,
but you don't need one in order to learn another.

  3. The laws carry consequences with them. Apply the laws, and people will follow you. Violate or ignore them, and you will not be able to lead others.

  4. These laws are the foundation of leadership. Once you learn the principles, you have to practice them and apply them to your life.

Whether you are a follower who is just beginning to discover the impact of leadership or a natural leader who already has followers,
you can become a better leader. As you read about the laws, you'll recognize that you may already practice some of them effectively. Other laws will expose weaknesses you didn't know you had. But the greater the number of laws you learn, the better leader you will become. Each law is like a tool, ready to be picked up and used to help you achieve your dreams and add value to other people. Pick up even one, and you will become a better leader. Learn them all, and people will gladly follow you.

Now, let's open the toolbox together.

It helps to read the book!

David Marquet - Practicum obviously failed to follow the basic rule of book reviewers - he failed to read the book. Everything he says is contray to the teachings of John Maxwell.

Maxwell is the leader of leaders!

This is my all time favorite book on leadership. Must reading for anyone in leadership, wanting to get into leadership, or wanting to see just how ineffective their leaders (if they are leaders) really are. Don't miss an opportunity to learn from John C. Maxwell's work or hear him speak!

A Must if you lead people.

I do not lead people in the workplace, this book goes beyond the workplace and into leadership principals that can be practiced into everyday life, family and friendship. When you read it, think about the people that you do work for.....you will sooooo badly want to give them a copy with a grin on your face, but when they were finished reading it, you will just have comitted political sucide. Or, the person that reads it may just implement these principals and make your existence in the work place tolerable. I know a few people at Airgas that should read this!

Great Read even better put into action.

Helpful and inciteful. Leadership has many venues, even as a parent, a teacher, and more...a good read but better when put into action. Results are just that. Results!

Maxwell's succeeds with a best seller

Maxwell's book is very entertaining and interesting to read. It was an easy read which makes it the best kind of book because individuals are simply given the facts of the book. I loved the application sections at the ends of each chapter because it allows you to be able to place the law of the leadership you have just read about and apply it to real life situations. Coming from a college student's point of view, not having much time to read a book, this book is great to make time for. I found this book very helpful to improving certain leadership skills before entering the work force.

Short and sweet: 21 principles of leadership

Frequent motivational author John C. Maxwell, a former pastor, squarely based these 21 laws of leadership on enduring values. These guidelines are meant to inspire, not innovate, as they offer techniques to make leading by principle a practical reality. Maxwell¿s straightforward, insightful rules are well worth the time you will spend reading them. We recommend this gem of simplicity as a game book for building stronger teams and becoming a better leader.

You need to read about how leaders connect... You need to read about how to get people to buy in... The results that this book can produce in you is well worth its small price.

I don't need to go to a Leaderhip school

Great book that I don't have to waste my time going to a 4 years degree school. I told my boss about the book, and he said this is what he has to go to the headquater for the training. I told him no need travel for that I can teach him myself.

    I'm just not buying it.

Yeah I bought this book and let me tell ya, It was the biggest waste of money since I bought the William Hung album. Not only are these steps impossible to follow, the language is not easily readable. Maybe in a perfect world would these ideas work, but as a resident of planet earth I am convinced they do not. Mr Ziggler is as phoney as his name sounds in my opinion, don't buy this garbage.

    your personal leadership inventory

Socrates advised, 'Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for.' Whether you like him or not, there's no denying that John Maxwell has a handle on leadership principles. This book boils down more than 30 years of Maxwell's life of learned and applied leadership to 21 laws. If you could condense 30 years of a man's life into one book of basic principles that you could learn and apply to your own life, what would it be worth to you? Although they all combine to form the foundation for leadership, each of the 21 laws stands alone. As you read through each law, take a personal inventory to determine which areas are working for you and which need to be improved. This book is not particularly good at showing how to apply each law to your own situation, but it does give excellent real-life examples of what happens when these laws are (and aren't) applied. Maxwell likes blowing his own horn to illustrate the laws in some cases, but he also uses many other 'big name' examples from the world of business, politics, the military, sports and the church. Each chapter will enable you to understand a key facet of your leadership ability, assess it for yourself, and begin the next step of filling in the gaps that have held you back from being the leader you could be. Larry Hehn, author of Get the Prize: Nine Keys for a Life of Victory

Maxwell is one of front leaders in Leadership

I think what Dr. Maxwell does is make it easy to comprehend theTheories or Law, that make them applicable in one's life. You can reach people if they can understand the Law's or Theories. Make it easy and people can grow! Everything rises and falls on Leadership.....

    Excellent Teaching guide

This book should be a bible for all who wish to pursue a role of leadership in any given field. The author is extremly relatable, and gives specific examples of situations in which he has used, or learned the leadership process.

    Great points for leaders!

I gave this book to my entire team, PLUS my boss! He called me and said, 'What! You think I (Harvard MBA, West Point Cadet, Blackhawk Capt.) need leadership education!' He then later called and said 'Thanks' and we commonly refer to it as good educational and developmental use...

    Not Just for Managers

There are really good books of this 'type' and really bad ones. Maxwell is excellent. This book is not just for those with the title of a leader. This book is for life and how to lead a good life. Every one of us is always selling something (not always monetary) and leading somebody or something.

    Yo CEO? Anyone following you?

John Maxwell goes deeper than mere theory and delivers a very practical text on leadership. Leadership is influence, not position. Take a look behind you. Is anyone following you? This book is for CEOs, pastors, principals, managers, and all aspiring leaders that have influence over others. Filled with hundreds of stories and illustrations that make it easy reading.
