Strange as it may seem, the key to good supernatural fiction is realism. Readers have to believe in the world that has been created in order to suspend their disbelief of the creatures set loose in it, and Wellington (Monster Planet) excels here. Most of the action takes place inside a women's prison, where vampire hunter Laura Caxton has been incarcerated and is being stalked by Earth's last vampire, Justinia Malvern. This could easily have dissolved into B-movie stereotype but instead seems intensely researched and utterly believable. The characters are likewise fully formed and consistent. VERDICT Since this is the third book in a series (after 13 Bullets, full-text available on the author's web site, and 99 Coffins), series readers may expect the principals to escape, but the cleverly managed ending avoids predictability. Wellington's voice continues to grow. Highly recommended for horror and vampire fiction fans.—Karl G. Siewert, MLIS, Tulsa City-Cty. Lib., OK
David Wellington is my new favorite author! These 4 books are AMAZING! I love the new take on the vampires and the way that the plots roll and thicken. These books are not for someone who is looking for love or romace. I hope that he write more to this story. I can not wait to see what Malverin has in store for Laura....

The maximum security prison is double the intend population with over 1300 of the worst dregs of humanity residing there. Laura is unconcerned as she eats soup in the cafeteria because she expects attacks and deaths, but not hers.
However, when she anticipated corpses she thought she would be the cause. Instead the prison has a special guest, the oldest known vampire Justinia Malvern who dines on the local population with plans to have Laura as her just dessert within 23 hours of the hunter's arrival. Each human Justina drains she also converts.
This is a terrific violent Vengeful Vampire thriller (see Vampire Zero, 13 Bullets and 99 Coffins) with a fascinating final twist that will stun fans. The story line is fast-paced and filled with plenty of blood and gore as expected by those who read this series. They also expect a High Midnight showdown, which they get. Laura's killing sprees is a trademark of the saga but the tale avoids the overall feel of repetition due to her diabolically brilliant opponent.

This is not a romanticized vision of vampires. The vampires are most definitely not nice or romantic but if you enjoy reading about vampires in any realm, and you want good to triumph you will enjoy the read.

Overview
In the next 23 hours, there will be no reprieve,no mercy, and no time off for good behavior.
When vampire hunter Laura Caxton is locked up in a maximum-security prison, the cop-turned-con finds herself surrounded by countless murderers and death-row inmates with nothing to lose . . . and plenty of time to kill.
Caxton’s always been able to watch her own back–even when it’s against a cell-block wall–but soon she learns that an even greater threat has slithered behind the bars to join her. Justinia Malvern, the world’s oldest living vampire, has ...
