Book Review of 25 Days, 26 Ways to Make This Your Best Christmas Ever by Ace Collins

If you are you singing the Charlie Brown blues complaining of how Christmas has morphed into a six-week season of commercialism, you will want to read book.

Whether you're looking for some quick Christmas history, some great Christmas recipes, or some unique perspective on embracing the commercialism of Christmas by sharing the Gospel with others, 25 Days, 26 Ways to Make This Your Best Christmas Ever is a good choice for this Christmas.

It's a short book and great for what I call my 'Christmas Planning Moments.' The twenty-six ways listed in the book encouraged and inspired me and nudged my perspective back in line with Christianity. We all get so carried away with the excitement of Christmas. This book gives the listmakers, the planners, the organizers among us something to check off as we hurry through the Christmas Season.

What were my favorite parts of this book? Day 3 - Making Christmas Mighty used the lyrics of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen to shake me up (as the reader) with straight talk. But, I needed to be shook up. Laying the responsibility of my enjoyment of Christmas squarely on my shoulders, exactly where it needed to be.

Another of my favorite parts was Day 18 - Embracing the Commercialization of Christmas. This chapter pointed out that Jesus used any family/friends gathering to share the gospel and we should as well. My favorite was the idea of putting your life verse on the inside flap of all the greeting cards or on the name tag of a gift.

And lastly, the Chapter entitled A Bonus Day - Filling a Big Box struck a chord in my heart as it described the English tradition of Boxing Day. This is a tradition that America would do well to observe.

A wonderful book organized and written to keep your perspective true during the Christmas Season, I recommend it highly. Pick this one up and keep it with your Christmas decorations. Next year when you begin to decorate, reread it or give it to someone else.

Great background on the traditions of Christmas

This book has great information on the history of many of the traditions of Christmas such as Advent, as well as the meaning behind some of the Christmas songs that have become such a large part of our Christmas holiday season. Walking through each chapter of the book as a day of the month of December has been enlightening and uplifting.

This book as become an Advent tradition for me.  Re-reading it each December the past several years, the stories have become familiar, but always welcome. And even thought I re-read it, I learn something new.  This year, I tried the peanut butter fudge recipe that the author mentioned and it was a huge hit.

The stories bring out the Christmas season without trying to downplay one part of the holiday over any other like so many try to do.

    Inspirational, moving, seasonal warmth

To keep, to reread, a different message each time it's reread...
I liked his "stories behind Christmas Songs" also.
The author is not preachy, but informative with many short stories illustrating his points.

    Wiser about mistletoe

I had low expectations for this little book. Having read it, I now have high regards for its useful content. I loved the chapters on mistletoe and wise men. It contains some great stories for use at the dinner table and Christmas parties.

    Christian-centric.

If you're a Scrooge and not a Christian, this book will not help overcome the Scrooge in you. This book is aimed at Christians with one task to read a chapter of Luke every day. The author assumes everyone knows the songs he mentions, most I never heard until I read this book. I'm not sure what I was expecting with this book, but being desperate to enjoy Christmas I was willing to listen. My religious beliefs do not fall into the Christian arena. All in all, I'm no closer to enjoying Christmas than I was before I opened this sermon. Perhaps next year I'll try Chanukah instead.
