The tracks trace the development of soul music in the '70s, the expressive pop/R&B of Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett combining with the Motown-styled Chairmen of the Board and the forward-looking funk of King Floyd. And then there are indelible hits like Clarence Carter's rural survival tale, "Patches." This collection is short, but it has been well chosen.
