Overview

Everybody's favorite arbiter of pop culture, Homer Simpson, would probably say of 2Gether: It's funny because it's true. Following in the footsteps of Spinal Tap, 2Gether is a fictitious boy band, whose "album" is also the soundtrack to an MTV mockumentary satirizing a musical phenomenon that is certainly ripe for fun-poking. The mastermind behind this project, video director Nigel Dick (Guns N' Roses, Britney Spears), definitely gets an "A" for authenticity. The quintet has one of each requisite boy band "type": the heartthrob, the rebel, the shy one, the older brother, and the cutie. And the sappy vocal harmonies, cheesy electronic drumbeats, predictable song structures, and schmaltzy production nearly make these songs into veritable teen pop hits. So where's the gag then? Well, some of it is in the lyrics, which revolve around the idea that, hey, wouldn't it be funny if all the sexual innuendo in typical boy band songs were more explicit? In the gushy ballad "Before We Say Goodbye," the boys sing: "In case we break up, can I still have sex with you?" And in "You're My Baby Girl": "Put your hand in mine, I will slap your sweet behind, you're my baby girl." The funniest song is actually the one by 2Gether's fictitious rival, Whoa! "Rub One Out" is an homage to masturbation that, unlike the 2Gether songs, maintains its joke from beginning to end. There's nothing equal to Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom" here, but if you wind up laughing at these songs in the context of the movie, you just might want to add this album to your collection. Of course, if you start to enjoy the stuff on anything other than a humorous level, consult your physician.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Tim Sheridan
This send-up of teen pinup bands like 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys has some truly hilarious moments, like the goofy "Say It (Don't Spray It)." But the whole album is such a dead-on parody that if you aren't a fan of the style, you probably won't need to hear the disc more than once.
Rolling Stone - Matt Diehl
...MTV’s Spinal Tap-style mockumentary on the subject, which satirizes the rivalry between fictional groups 2gether and Whoa!, finds lots of comedic air in the boy-band balloon.

The cd is great. I had to rush out and get it the day it was released, after hearing the first single U+ME=US(calculus). I never thought that somone would write about this stuff, but some how it works. It is a must have for boy bands fans!! Oh yeah and it doesn't hurt that the cast is full of Hot young,or maybe not so young guys. But it's great.
