XXX: Behind the Scenes of Porn Valley vol. 1 (1996-1997) [NOOK Book]

Overview

In the summer of 1996, I answered a classified ad in the LA Weekly newspaper for a graphic designer. Although I wasn't trained in graphic design, I had picked up some desktop publishing skills during my few years of work in the magazine world. I figured I knew enough to at least get through the interview.

Overview

In the summer of 1996, I answered a classified ad in the LA Weekly newspaper for a graphic designer. Although I wasn't trained in graphic design, I had picked up some desktop publishing skills during my few years of work in the magazine world. I figured I knew enough to at least get through the interview.

When I showed up for the interview, it wasn't at an office building, nor was it at any place that looked even remotely professional. It was simply a guy's house. But the guy just happened to publish about a half dozen adult magazines out of one room in that house.

The interview took place in his backyard, by the pool.

"Are you cool with working for adult publications?" he asked me.

Two years prior to that I was not cool with it. I had been having trouble finding writing work in the magazine world, so I took a job with AVN (Adult Video News), the adult entertainment industry's trade magazine. I spent a week reviewing porn movies (in VHS format) before returning the videos and respectfully declining any future work. Watching porn was not what I wanted to do.

Two years later, porn wanted me back. This time I gave in.

It wasn't long before the publisher realized that beyond my basic computer skills, I really didn't know anything about graphic design.

"I can write," I told him. So in November of 1996, he sent me out on set to do a behind the scenes report of Wicked Pictures latest feature, "Wicked Weapon," featuring a fast-rising starlet named Jenna Jameson.

At this point, porn had yet to break into the mainstream, the Internet was barely a whisper and the industry was still very much taboo. Nevertheless, there was a distinct air of excitement and momentum. Everybody was making money hand over fist. Even the worst productions of the year were profitable. And the best garnered hundreds of thousands.

Within a few short years of my entry into the business, porn would be breaking through the glass ceiling and entering into the mainstream consciousness like never before. The mainstream Hollywood motion picture "Boogie Nights" would give porn retro class. Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee's sex tape would further diminish the line between mainstream Hollywood and motion picture's bastard sibling across the hill in San Fernando Valley.

San Fernando Valley would soon become well known as Porn Valley. And Porn Valley would be popularized as a multi-billion dollar industry that was at the front lines of the battle for the First Amendment.

But in 1996, I was just a kid looking for a freelance writing gig. I happened to be in the right place at the right time. What follows are the stories of what happened behind the scenes in Porn Valley, the individual tales of the people who made the movies that made the industry that would, within a decade, become an indistinguishable part of American pop culture.
