Description:This is a textbook for teaching ICD-9-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems to students in a structured coding course. The book may be used by instructors in more than one course.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a resource for coding instruction in the classroom, for continuing education of coders, for individual self-study, and as a reference for practicing coders.
Audience:The audience includes students in the coding classroom, individuals with past coding instruction seeking to return to coding positions, and practicing coders for their continuing education needs. The author is a professor at Alfred State College in New York and is assisted by two contributing educators who are coding professionals and college program coordinators.
Features:The first seven of the 19 chapters address ICD-9-CM and HCPCS coding instruction. Chapters 8-18 provide CPT coding instruction and Chapter 19 provides insurance and reimbursement concepts. The accompanying CD-ROM disks provide encoder software and coding study tools. Supplements to the book include an instructor's manual, student workbook, electronic classroom manager, online companion for students and faculty, and WebTutor for WebCT or Blackboard for an Internet-based course management.
Assessment:The author and the contributors have created a comprehensive textbook that addresses ICD-9-CM, HCPCS, CPT coding, and basic reimbursement principles. Each chapter is nicely organized with an introduction, exercises, summary, study checklist, Internet links and a review. The exercises are good challenging activities for the student. The book is jam-packed with information about coding with 876 pages in the chapters and almost 100 more pages in the appendixes. Good supplementary books are provided to assist the instructor in teaching the course. It appears that the book focuses more on CPT instruction than ICD-9-CM and HCPCS coding instruction, but all three systems are covered. This is good textbook for serious coding instruction.
