Children's Literature - Marilyn CourtotAs one might expect in a LEGO reader, all of the illustrations consist of items made with Legos. The story describes the preparations necessary to prepare a shuttle for launch. The support ground staff and the crew are all ready for the countdown before blast off. The ride is a little bumpy as the crew heads toward space, but once there it is an amazing experience to float around weightless. The boosters were jettisoned earlier and readers see that they were picked up since they were designed to be reusable. Careful readers may be in for a little surprise if they look out the window next to the sleeping astronaut. While the story is accurate, mention is not made that the U.S. shuttle program has come to an end and that there will be no more launches like the one depicted in this early reader. A Level 1 book in the Scholastic reader series which is written with sight words, simple sentences and 50 to 250 words. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
