Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Inside this nonfiction reader which is more like a chapter book is a pair of 3-D glasses. While it makes some of the images pop off the pages, if the glasses are lost the books is still quite readable. The focus is bugs and in particular microbugs, those creatures that you do not see with the naked eye. The first spread defines what a bug is and then describes how some use different parts of their bodies to taste and hear. Bugs have fine hairs that pick up vibrations made by sound and butterflies taste with their feet. Some bugs like millipedes have lots of legs while gastropods like snails may have only one. Throughout the descriptions and full color illustrations there are some interesting bit of trivia. Caterpillars for example are eating machines with some eating as much as 27,000 times their birth weight. Many bugs live in groups and have big homes like bees and termites. There are also bugs that play a vital role in nature by eating bad bugs that would destroy crops and others that eat decaying animals and dung this keeping this world cleaner and healthier. The pictures of the microbugs are terrific. The biggest problem with this title is that young children may be afraid to go to bed at night for fear of the dust mites, vampire bugs and bed bugs. Part of the "3-D Thrillers!" series which will really appeal to those boys in second through fourth grade. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
