Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Following in the interactive vein of Carman's Skeleton Creek series, this story collection launches a series with three components—audio, text, and video. Kids can visit a Web site and enter a password (provided in the book) to listen to a fairly creepy audio introduction to each of these 10 tales (nine of which were released earlier this year in an app, along with their audio and video components). After returning to the book, readers use another password to gain access to its online video conclusion. Sounding both a welcome and a warning, the audio introductions are somewhat superfluous; more substantive are the synergetic print stories and videos, some of which pack a chilling punch. These include the tale of a teen who is sucked into a mirror when she shoplifts from an antique store; a boy who meets a harrowing end after discovering that he's riding a chairlift with a monster; and a girl who's attacked by a gargoyle that springs to life outside her window. The polished interactive elements should help hook reluctant readers on the print element. Ages 1014. (Sept.)
Children's Literature - Laura J. Brown
Readers who like horror, ghost stories, and being scared out of their wits, as well as short stories, will love this book by best-selling young adult author, Carman. In this first title in the "3:15" series, readers will be dreadfully delighted to read ten stories that will give them the creeps and wanting more spookiness all at the same time. This book is a collection of short, scary stories for the adventurous teen with a hunger for horror, but who also has a busy schedule. Each story takes about fifteen minutes to read. The stories are not connected so they can be read in any order. The spooky stories do have a few things in common, one is that it does have a teenager as the lead character, and secondly, after all the scary stuff happens, that is a lesson to be learned. Readers can also go online and see the video clips of the stories at www.315stories.com. Once at the web site, all a reader has to do is submit the password that is on the title page and listen to the audio introduction of the story. The only problem is that readers have to have JW Player installed on their computers to watch any of the videos. This is an engaging book for those who love the genre, as well as those who may not think they do but who will enjoy it anyway because the stories are not too scary. Reviewer: Laura J. Brown

Gr 46—In this chilling new series, 3:15 is a "place where spooky stories find a home." Readers will experience 10 terrifying tales in three parts: a fearsome audio introduction, several pages of spooky text, and a spine-chilling video conclusion accessible online or through a free downloadable mobile app-all in 15 minutes or less. Each story contains a cliff-hanger that includes a password unlocking its ending. Readers meet Cody Miller, whose greediness leads to an ominous mistake involving a man with a hook as a hand; Emma Franklin, who learns that not all childhood tears are foolish; and Dylan Smith, who should know better than to show off his snowboarding skills on a haunted mountain. The other stories range from a mirror with diabolical powers to a cannibalistic teacher, horrific ghosts, deathly gargoyles, gruesome monsters with claws, and giant atomic ants. The selections are filled with light suspense, encouraging readers to watch the endings. While this is a great multimedia experience, readers without access to the Internet or mobile applications will not be able to experience the stories' conclusions. For those who do have access, it's a first purchase.—Krista Welz, North Bergen Public Library, NJ
