Editorial Reviews

VOYA
A klatch of vampires descend upon Barrow, Alaska, where a month of Arctic darkness promises all the opportunity they will need to feast on the small town's unfortunate residents. This terrifying premise sets the stage for a story of heroism in the face of horrifying circumstances, as the town's husband-and-wife law enforcement team tries to survive the onslaught. Black, white, red, and fangs (oh so many fangs) dominate the chilly landscape created by illustrator Templesmith. With its random and explosive acts of violence, this book puts the "graphic" in graphic novel and evokes such classic horror movies as Alien and The Thing, a treat for fans of the genre but a real stomach-turner for the timid. Although this reviewer might quibble with the book's lack of character development and its abrupt dispatch of an interesting subplot, few teen readers will share such objections, especially when faced with the heartbreaking conclusion. Originally a three-comic run, the book adds author and illustrator bios and a partial script, a bonus for fans and aspiring comic writers alike. Not for the fainthearted, this novel in graphic format pushes boundaries and buttons and propels its author into the limelight with the power of its brutal vision.
