Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book is a treasure trove of activities for children who like to do investigations and have fun. The activities cover many subject areas. Art related activities involve drawing, painting, making candles, and pressing flowers. Some of the science explorations involve plants, animals, and sky watching. There are writing opportunities that direct children to write letters with a purpose, keep a journal, write poetry, and create a dictionary. Multicultural activities allow children to celebrate different holidays and learn new words from a different language. Some of the adventures give children the opportunity to become entrepreneurs by running a carnival, a lemonade stand, or a pet show. Children can also choose activities that may help them become more productive and caring citizens by volunteering to serve others. This book is as good resource for teachers and parents. It is an excellent source of enjoyable learning experiences for rainy days, weekends, holidays, and summer vacations, but adult supervision is needed with many of the activities. As a part of the "Discovery Kids" series, it encourages children to explore the world around them. 2000, Dutton Children's Books, $12.99. Ages 9 to 12. Reviewer: Marguerite E. Caines
