Overview

The essential home entertainment guide for kids and grandparents!

Sarah doesn't want her grandparents to get bored during their visit, so she and her brother and sister make sure they are always entertained with fun games, creative crafts, delicious food, and lots more!

This unique storybook contains -- you guessed it! -- 38 different fun-filled activities for children and adults to share. When the characters in the story do something really fun that you'd like to try, simple step-by-step instructions and recipes are right there, and each requires only easy-to-find, around-the-house objects.

You can approach this book any way you want. You can sit down and read it straight through as a story -- if you can resist the urge to jump up in the middle and make a delicious cucumber shark or maple syrup magic potion, that is! You can also read the book a chapter at a time, trying each activity as you go along.
Or you can read the whole book and do all the activities in two days, just like Sarah and her grandparents.

Some of the easy, creative ways Sarah entertains her grandparents are:

  • Presto Puppets
  • Eat-Your-Words Pancakes
  • Monster Spray
  • Belly-Button Soup
  • Grandpa's Samurai Hat

A cookbook, craft book, and game book all wrapped up in an amusing story!

Editorial Reviews

Smithsonian Notable Book for Children 2003
More than a clever survival guide for grown-ups, this assortment of simple and fun activities, from card games and cooking projects to bedtime rituals, offers up the stuff of childhood memories.
Canadian Materials - Valerie Nielsen
As a book to browse through on a rainy day...38 Ways to Entertain Your Grandparents provides some good opportunities for inter-generational fun. Recommended.
Publishers Weekly
Activities are woven into a tale about grandparents who come to visit, 38 Ways to Entertain Your Grandparents by Dette Hunter, illus. by Deirdre Betteridge. Each section of the story suggests things for children and adults to do together, such as preparing an "All Pizza Supper" (with tortilla treats for dessert) and playing a game of "Grandfather, May I?"
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Three siblings are left with their grandparents overnight and entertain them with special meals, crafts, and games. This humorous story is related by the middle child, with the recipes or instructions appearing where they are described. The food preparation is well explained but some ingredients might necessitate a special trip to the grocery store. The art activities use predominantly paper, crayons, and scissors, and the games are very simple, such as Concentration, Crazy Eights, etc. The story line and clever role reversal are original and entertaining, and the lively and colorful art showing the shared family fun contributes well to the overall enjoyment.-Cathie Reed, The Montessori School, Lutherville, MD Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    Fun and Easy Ideas

Just what I was looking for when I need ideas to entertain my grandchildren "guests". Ideas are simple but engaging for children in many age groups. They are the type of activities that are missing in today's busy world. My grandchildren (5,6,8,10) love the story line and relate the activities to the characters i.e. "bet Joe would make a mess of this!" The Monster spray is a great idea. Tomorrow we are trying Belly Button soup! I just ordered some more for gifts - everyone knows,is or has a grandmother.
