3d: Diet,Discipline and Discipleship

Overview

The best way to know the heart of the 3D program, is to know the heart of the woman who took it national and has guided its development ever since. Writing with transparent and endearing honesty, Carol Showalter, the wife of a prominent Presbyterian minister in upstate New York, tells of fighting (and mostly losing) the battle against excess weight all her life.

In 1972, she was about to enroll (again) in a well-known secular diet program that was meeting in her church, when she...

In 1972, she was about to enroll (again) in a well-known secular diet program that was meeting in her church, when she was arrested by a Sunday school poster of a happy face, with a slogan, "Smile, God has the answer!"

She could not get it out of her mind. And when she prayed about it, she found He did have the answer.

Today, there are nearly one million graduates of the 12-week program, 3D, many of whom have had their lives wonderfully changed, as they discovered that God would meet them, wherever thay were at and would heal them, often through others who shared their struggles.

That revelation—and how much more time He desired her to spend in prayer with Him, conferring with Him on everything— changed her whole way of looking at things, and her life.

Editorial Reviews

Mary Lou Carbon
This program is a gift. It is an integrated, comprehensive program that allows all the members to make lifestyle choices and changes for God and with God.
Neva Coyle
Reaching the new, and re-inspiring an older generation of women, Carol encourages us all toward true freedom found only through discipline. Solid in doctrine and Biblical truth, the 3D program is classic and dependable. This book brings credibility back to the Christian approach to life and weight issues.
R. Marie Griffith
No one has had a more lasting impact on the Christian diet movement than Carol Showalter. Here she illuminates her journey since the formation of 3D, reflecting on the meanings of discipline and discipleship and sharing new thoughts on weight and diet as spiritual issues.
Publishers Weekly
With all of the fads, trends and here-today-gone-tomorrow crazes of the diet industry, it's refreshing and reassuring to encounter a tried-and-true method. Carol Showalter's 1975 book, 3D: Diet, Discipline & Discipleship, which has already sold half a million copies and served as a manual for 3D church groups across the country, is being re-launched this month from Paraclete Press. Showalter's book is distinctive in that it is not just a diet book, with the usual recipes, testimonials and sample menus. It is first and foremost a candid spiritual autobiography, chronicling the author's religious journey and her struggles to overcome judgmentalism and lack of self-esteem. Showalter's forthright honesty about the ups and the downs of dieting, family life and her church community will resonate with many readers. ( Jan.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

. . . candidly and disarmingly tells the story of her own struggles. . . packed with "folk wisdom". . .

Library Journal
Less a weight-loss program than an affir-mation of Christian living, this is a revised edition of Showalter's original 1977 book. A faith-based 12-week plan, it relies on the familiar American Diabetes Association food exchange lists for balanced meals. The first half explains how the author's growth in her personal relationship with God led her to her present ministry with the 3D program. Aside from the diet, daily devotional readings (sold separately), journaling, and Bible study are the foundations of this plan. For Christian collections and large public libraries.
