Barnes & Noble - Brett Johnson
The death of a founding member would derail most bands. Yet, despite the tragic loss of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes -- the rapping third of the best-selling female trio TLC -- in a 2002 car crash, surviving members Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozanda "Chili" Thomas stay on track with the surprisingly polished 3D. A portion of the disc, the group's fourth and possibly last, was recorded prior to Lopes's death and features the quick-witted rhymes we'll all miss. On "Girl Talk," Left Eye quips, "You got to lick it/ before you stick it," while T-Boz and Chili sing in hushed tones, revealing what women really talk about during those covert ladies-room sessions. That same finger-snapping, man-checking attitude -- a TLC signature that drove such hits as "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" and "No Scrubs" -- is prevalent throughout the disc, and with beats coming from Dallas Austin, Timbaland, and Rodney Jerkins, the trio shapes another batch of slinky, dance-oriented R&B grooves based on their tried-and-true formula. Top-notch examples include the Timbaland-produced "Dirty Dirty," with its tumbling drums, electro-kazoo sound effects, and chanted hook, and the womping bass line and handclaps of the Austin-twiddled "Quickie." But these crazy-sexy ladies have never been afraid to slow the tempo and show their cool, more vulnerable side. In the tradition of heartstring-tuggers "Waterfalls" and "Unpretty," TLC don't shy away from introspection here. Admitting to their inner demons on the stellar, folksy-pop "Damaged," T-Boz sings: "I'm falling in love/ There's one disadvantage/ I want you to know that I've been damaged." Though they've experienced both the joys and pains of love, and the sudden loss of a dear friend, adversity has apparently made T-Boz and Chili stronger, and those bittersweet memories add new dimension to 3D.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
How good is TLC? So good that they survive the tragic, early death of a key member -- Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who was killed in a car accident during the recording of 3D -- with grace and style, turning out a record that sits comfortably next to their modern classics, Crazysexycool and FanMail. Perhaps surviving members Chilli and T-Boz spend a little too much time in the lyrics paying tribute to their colleague, but it's easy to glide past that and just concentrate on the strong songwriting and stylish production. Like their previous albums, the particulars don't matter as much as the overall impression. No member of TLC has an astounding voice, but their skills are exploited to the hilt, since the material not only suits them; it's melodic, memorable, and grows in stature with each play. Best of all, the production plays to the strength of the song, balancing the group's character and abilities with the hooks and character of the song. Perhaps 3D doesn't blaze trails like their other albums, but it never plays it safe, it always satisfies, and it's one of the best modern soul albums of 2002. A bittersweet triumph, perhaps; but it's better to go out on a positive note. [The album is also available as a 13-song clean edition.]
Rolling Stone - Barry Walters
The album isn't the romp it might have been had Lopes survived, but 3D solidly embodies black pop in a year in which it has lacked a center.
Entertainment Weekly - David Browne
Thanks to such hired guns as the Neptunes and Rodney Jerkins, TLC have made a better post-tragedy album than expected. (B)
Vibe - Dimitri Ehrlich
There are plenty of lovely moments -- from the clean, sharp vocal arrangements of "Good Love" to the gorgeous guitar lines Raphael Saadiq plays on "So So Dumb." 1/2

The album isn't the romp it might have been had Lopes survived, but 3D solidly embodies black pop in a year in which it has lacked a center.

    this is the best yet.

TLC has done it again with 3D. This cd has a great mix of songs on it. The songs bounce around from fast to slow over and over, but the lyrics are well written and the music is catchy. this is definitly an album to own in 2002.
