School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Adult/High School-As this story opens, a mysterious stranger is looking for a young woman he calls the goddess of his destiny. The girl, Pai, is living the life of a typical Japanese schoolgirl, but she is being stalked by faceless puppets. Do they have anything to do with Yakumo, the ragged young man who says he is her wu, an undying bodyguard, and tells her that she is an immortal demon? Pai is left with no option but to confront the truth when the puppets kidnap her two best friends and hold them for ransom: the immortality of their creator. Blood could be a horror film-it even includes a gratuitous shower scene, and Pai tends to end up with her clothing in tatters, while Yakumo has the snappy dialogue down pat ("Smile when you say that-or you can rescue yourself!"). But the story is intriguing, even if all of the questions aren't answered here. Readers may not learn exactly what a sanjiyan is, or how Pai made Yakumo her servant, but his affection for her is genuine, and her struggle to accept that she isn't human evokes sympathy. While the black-and-white art is clear and conveys the story well, it's not exceptional in any way.-Susan Salpini, Fairfax County Public Schools, VA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
