Mid-way through 1998, the porn industry had its first HIV outbreak. A male performer had contracted it and spread it to three women before outbreak was identified and contained.
The result was that the industry instituted a self-imposed condom-only policy. It was a show of responsibility aimed to keep any outside influences from infringing on a business that had only recently been legalized.
Nevertheless, rules were made to be broken — and Rob Black's company, Extreme Associates, decided they would be the first to break the condom-only rule. While other companies saw their sales of condom-only product wane slightly, Extreme Associates was enjoying a financial explosion.
Truth is, everything adult-oriented was selling. Even the worst products of the year were financially successful. And the industry was, basically, one big party. Companies were sponsoring parties on the Sunset Strip. And the porn shoots themselves were turning into parties.
Viagra had also hit the market during this time, and male performers were reaping the benefits of improved hard-ons.
Everything, it seemed, was working out in favor of the adult entertainment industry. Adult Video News was reporting that the porn industry was a 4 billion dollar industry. Nothing could stop the porn industry train — not even the threat of HIV.
The porn business was quickly breaking through into the mainstream consciousness and the public was casting their votes with their purchases: the public wanted to see sexual depravity.
The porn industry listened. And delivered.
