About the Author

Jerry Gaines was the first black athletic- full scholarship to Virginia Tech in Track and Field. As a pioneer he proved his value as a motivator and leader on and off the field by setting records in the hurdles and long jump. He graduated with a degree in Spanish and was drafted into the army as a communications expert and left the militaryat the end of the Vietnam War. He moved back to his home state and decided to enter the teaching profession. Now after 38 years teaching students, teachers and administrators, he has won teacher of the year and coach of the year in his district.
During his tenure he wrote thousands of letters to his students and they have written him back. He is a true mentor and friend to those students who are now his doctor, banker, real estate broker, and neighbors. Jerry is a life-long mentor. He now is a motivational Speaker and Coach to kids, schools, and businesses all over the state of Virginia.
