Overview

Create unforgettable characters your readers will love!

45 Master Characters will make your characters and their stories more compelling, complex and original than ever before.

You'll explore the most common male and female archetypes—the mythic, cross-cultural models from which all characters originate—and learn how to use them as foundations for your own unique characters. Examples culled from literature, television and film illustrate just how memorable and effective these archetypes can be—from "Gladiators" and "Kings" like Rocky Balboa and Captain Ahab to "Amazons" and "Maidens" like Xena and Guinevere.

The mythic journeys of heroes and heroines—the progression of events upon which each archetype's character arc develops—are also examined. Building such a "journey" into your character's story will enable you to stop worrying about what happens next and get on with telling your tale.

It's a power-packed method for creating characters that stand the test of time!

Excellant book about achetypes that is way less cumbersome and confusing than others. Also includes the Heroine's Journey which is very different fromt he Hero's Journey. The Heroine's Journey is crucial to anyone wanting to write or understand feminine mythology. It is the blueprint for those so-called unimportant *girley* movies and books that surprised TPTB in publilshing and film making by becoming huge megahits.

45 Master Characters is a generally straight-forward book leaning towards the creation of unique and intriguing characters. By ascribing certain mythological deities and thier literal personifications, you get to see how most people are perceieved by an outside source. For the professional writer or scholar, this would be a good tool to use to base stereotypical characters on. For students and the novice writer, it gives a great starting place for the customisation of a character. I would definitely recommend this book to be added to your personal library. You may never know when you might need it.

45 MASTER CHARACTERS, by Victoria Lynn Schmidt, explains the value of archetype characters, and why authors should study and use them. Heroes, villains, and support characters are outlined, as well as journeys for both male and female characters. Far from cookie-cutter writing, this book explores the use of archetypes as a springboard for injecting new life into fiction. This approach to beefing-up characters absolutely beats starting with a blank page.

Victoria Schmidt's _45 Master Characters_ is an excellent resource for understanding archetype by example, as well as helping a writer build a round, motivated and believable character. Her examples from the literatury canon, history, popular fiction and media give her descriptions depth and clarity. I have used this book both in my English classes to describe archetype and in my own writing to explore my characters and their approach to life. My friends and I have even picked out the archetypes that we personally exemplify. A great book just to read, and very helpful to writers and teachers.
