Overview

Watched by 40,000 South Africans and telecast live to millions more on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2003, the 46664 charity concert in Cape Town joined over 30 international performers to raise awareness and funds in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The 4 ½-hour event was the first stage of a global initiative championed by Nelson Mandela, which takes its name from his prison number during the apartheid era. Together with the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, U2's Bono and The Edge, Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor, Bob Geldof, and the late Joe Strummer, Mandela's appeal has initiated a score of artistic collaborations and launched programs for treatment, education, and research in Africa.

The 46664 concert has been released on three CDs -- African Prayer, Long Walk to Freedom, and Amandla -- featuring the artists mentioned above, plus a host of South African musicians and special guests including Beyonce, Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), Paul Oakenfold, Annie Lennox, the Corrs, Jimmy Cliff, and many others. A double-DVD set, 46664: The Event, includes the full concert presentation, two documentaries, extensive artist interviews, and twelve one-minute films by contemporary visual artists addressing HIV/AIDS.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - David Jeffries
On November 29, 2003, former Eurythmic Dave Stewart and former Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor held a benefit concert in Cape Town, South Africa, to kick off Nelson Mandela's AIDS awareness campaign, named 46664 after his prisoner number. Of the three discs that document the concert, Long Walk to Freedom is the earthiest. The three huge, Mandela-centric numbers that kick off the disc are great, but could have benefited from being spread out. Angélique Kidjo rocks every single one of the 40,000 audience members with her powerful "Afrika," Jimmy Cliff gives one of his most serene performances of "Many Rivers to Cross," and the influence of the crowd slowly changes Ladysmith Black Mambazo's "Homeless" from melancholy to uplifting. Besides being the most cohesive of the three discs, Long Walk to Freedom is also the set's most empowering collection.
