Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"This easy-to-read anesthesia book covers a wide range of topics using a bulleted format."

"As part of the 5-Minute Consult series, the hallmark of which is to provide relevant information in a readily accessible format, this book lives up to that standard of being a quick reference. There are a few other books available with similar intent, but being the latest, as well as being accessible online, gives this book an edge. Medical students and internists evaluating a patient preoperatively also will find this book most helpful."

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Tariq M. Malik, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This easy-to-read anesthesia book covers a wide range of topics using a bulleted format.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide evidence-based information in a simple and readily retrievable fashion, like a reference book, only smaller and simpler. The book is generally successful in achieving this worthy objective.
Audience: Anesthesiologists at all levels of training and with all levels of experience are the intended audience. The book is edited by an experienced clinician, but quite a few chapters have been written by house staff and medical students.
Features: The book covers 480 topics in alphabetical order. Each topic is covered in a separate two-page chapter. All chapters have the same format, starting with a basic overview of the term followed by physiological and pathological principles and, finally, perioperative concerns and anesthetic management. Chapters end with suggested further reading and important references, along with clinical pearls. The topics are broadly related to human physiology, different diseases, surgical procedures, and the management of a few conditions. With its two-page chapters and bulleted format, the book attempts to present something about everything. The information it presents is fast and factual, but does not lead to the development of any clinical acumen. Surprisingly, there are no separate chapters dedicated to chronic pain or ultrasound-guided nerve blocks.
Assessment: As part of the 5-Minute Consult series, the hallmark of which is to provide relevant information in a readily accessible format, this book lives up to that standard of being a quick reference. There are a few other books available with similar intent, but being the latest, as well as being accessible online, gives this book an edge. Medical students and internists evaluating a patient preoperatively also will find this book most helpful.
