Overview

This pocket-sized book is the first osteopathic clinical manual to be organized by diagnoses in a two-page, quick-reference format. In the tradition of The 5-Minute Consult Series, each diagnosis is presented on a two-page spread. The first page has a definition of the disease, a list of associated autonomic and motor innervations, and a list of common somatic dysfunctions. The second page lists the techniques that might be used for those somatic dysfunctions. The second page is further subdivided into three levels of treatment: 2-minute, 5-minute, and extended. Next to each technique is the corresponding ICD-9 code for billing. Photos and schematic drawings are included.

The fully searchable online text is included with purchase of this book.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: The authors present a very useful summary of osteopathic manipulative indications and therapies for practicing primary care physicians. The format makes it easy to use as a reference.
Purpose: The authors readily admit that integrating manipulative therapy into a busy practice can be difficult and they attempt to offer a simple solution. Their objective of putting manipulative treatment back into the hands of all osteopathic physicians is a worthy one and the authors have taken a very practical approach to achieve that end.
Audience: This book is written for primary care practitioners who wish to include manipulative therapy in their busy daily practice. It is also a quite useful reference for students. The authors are well known practicing and teaching osteopathic physicians.
Features: Each chapter includes outlines of the physiology, somatic dysfunctions, and treatment strategies of manipulative therapies. The descriptions and photos of different therapies are succinct and intuitive. One very practical aspect of this book is the addition of ICD-9 and CPT billing code information for individual common osteopathic treatments. The complete text and photos are reproduced on the publisher's website which readers can access via a login code supplied in the book. Finally, there is a comprehensive bibliography of current manipulative therapies for reference.
Assessment: This is a well organized, concise, intuitive book, very easy to use and perfect for busy practitioners to have at their desks for easy reference.
