Now in its revised, updated Second Edition, this best-selling reference is designed for quick consultation on problems seen in infants, children, and adolescents. FEATURES:

  • Famous two-page layout provides an instant overview on more than 425 medical/surgical problems.
  • Topics are arranged alphabetically, so you can turn to peerless commentary on basics, diagnosis, treatment, medications, follow-up, and miscellaneous considerations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Benjamin Danielson, MD (University of Washington School of Medicine)
Description: Providing acute pediatric care is an extremely demanding endeavor. Practitioners contend with a wide range of ages and long differential diagnoses, and time is at a premium. In this clinical setting this text is extremely useful because it is an easy to use, surprisingly comprehensive resource.
Purpose: The editors are very effective in fulfilling the goal of providing a useful, thorough, yet quick pediatric reference.
Audience: The target audience includes nurses, medical students, residents, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and physicians who provide acute clinical care to a pediatric population.
Features: This second edition is an enhancement of the comprehensive nature of the easy-to-use first edition. Two-page (or less) compilations of medical information organized by symptoms as well as specific diagnoses are presented. Important features of history and physical examination are included. A few important symptoms are not included (e.g., dizziness or vertigo), lab work up recommendations are not always appropriately prioritized, a few treatment recommendations seem outdated (e.g., antibiotic management of otitis media or theophylline for bronchiolitis), and a few typographical errors exist (e.g., rather importantly, a "<10%" that should be ">10%" on page 327). Still, over all this is an extremely useful tool enhanced by special, unique features like "pitfalls," "Common Questions and Answers," and relevant ICD-9 codes.
Assessment: I find this book to be uniquely useful in the setting of a busy pediatric acute care practice.

Intended to provide a source for easy and quick retrieval of information about children's diseases and problems, this volume is organized into several reference sections. The first provides brief descriptions of children's primary complaints, such as bruising, earaches, and speech delay, and the second examines specific diseases including congestive heart failure, hypertension, and roseola. Schwartz (pediatrics, U. of Pennsylvania School of Medicine) is joined by nearly 200 pediatrics specialists in writing the thousands of entries, each providing a definition, differential diagnosis, history taking procedures, how to do the medical examination, lab aids, and answers to commonly asked questions. The volume also includes hundreds of tables, and a section on herbal treatments currently in practice. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

    The 25 minute consult

Many people feel that this book is a must have for all pediatric residents- which is of course why I bought it. I remember being a first year on call with a very smart third year- who later became cheif resident- she didn't know something so we looked it up in the 5 minute consult. When I became a second year- and had to make some decisions- I tried to use this book. Well, just like real consultants- it wasn't very helpful. There are a lot of topics- each one takes about 2 large pages of fairly small print- complete with etiology and so on. It will take more like at least 25 minutes to read- and it doesn't tell you what to do in the end. I only just now noticed that the authors are all from CHOP- so I guess the info is probably very acurate- but just not as practical as you might want.
