Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
What does math have to do with being a pop star? Or swatting a fly? The answer, as you might have guessed, is everything. This small, easy-to-read, book makes a good case for math being connected to many parts of life kids (and adults) previously thought as math-free. Pop stars need music. Music is built on math. The flies are mathematically inclined because the famous mathematician Descartes conceived of the now standard graph (X and Y axis), while using a grid-like fly swatter. Other topics are less of a leap. We may already understand that “thinking like a robot” involves math, but Rooney goes ahead and explains some of the basics of programing, including counting in a base 5, base 2, and base 16. Each section asks the reader to participate in the math-fest. While reading about robots, she asks, “How would you write your age if you were a robot (binary)?” Illustrated with attractive drawings and photos, and written in an easy to understand, breezy style, this will make an excellent book for kids who are already excited by math, and it may pull in a few more who did not yet know they could be excited. Back matter includes a glossary and index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen; Ages 7 to 11.
