Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
The popularity of television shows such as CSI has made forensic experts out of many of us but that is just one of the chapters in this fascinating book. Each of the fifty topics gives the reader a little background information and then describes the science behind the topic. Some of the chapters include simple experiments that readers can do on their own, which teachers will appreciate since children learn better when they can see results for themselves. Sidebars throughout the book give examples of practical applications of the science discussed, or describe in better detail what is involved. For example, the chapter about making music has two sidebars; one that gives an explanation of sound waves and what the sound produced by several instruments looks like; and the other that helps readers understand how to play a stringed instrument such as a guitar. Some of the chapters answer questions that readers might be curious about and some provide practical applications for the science they describe. There is a chapter about surviving a snake bite and one about staying safe when falling. While readers up to adult age will enjoy reading this book, the intended audience is for readers between seven and twelve. Teachers may be able to use in in their classes to demonstrate some scientific principles and students may be able to use it to build science fair projects. There is a glossary and an index at the back. Recommended. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
